"I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation… It's a profound thought… How every person is a new door, opening up into other worlds." Six Degrees of Separation is a modern American classic play: an explosive comedy that exposes white middle-class hypocrisy and prejudice. The play is a sharp, wittybut seriousexploration of the individual in society and the values or beliefs which motivate them.A young African-American man gains access to the homes of upper-class New Yorkers by pretending to be the son of actor Sidney Poitier. Treatedwith suspicion and then affection, he soonwreaks havoc in their comfortable lives. The playfirst opened off-Broadway in 1990 and, after playing to sold-out houses andovating audiences, it was producedinternationallyand made into a blockbuster film starring Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing and Will Smith in 1994. It won numerous awards, including an Olivier and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.

The pioneering young scientist whose work on the structure of small worlds has triggered an avalanche of interest in networks. In this remarkable book, Duncan Watts, one of the principal architects of network theory, sets out to explain the innovative research that he and other scientists are spearheading to create a blueprint of our connected planet. Whether they bind computers, economies, or terrorist organizations, networks are everywhere in the real world, yet only recently have scientists attempted to explain their mysterious workings. From epidemics of disease to outbreaks of market madness, from people searching for information to firms surviving crisis and change, from the structure of personal relationships to the technological and social choices of entire societies, Watts weaves together a network of discoveries across an array of disciplines to tell the story of an explosive new field of knowledge, the people who are building it, and his own peculiar path in forging this new science.

Using his contacts on both sides of the law, he is ideally positioned to help capture a serial killer who appears to be choosing victims at random. The victims' only connection is their gender: All are women. Marley writes an article giving the killer the nickname "Six Degrees," as in six degrees of separation. Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1.0, University of Applied Sciences Kempten, course: IFEM, language: English, abstract: It is quite natural for human beings to be part of a network. Our way of thinking today is permeated by network and we live in an era of networks. Facebook, Twitter and Xing have many millions of users. Within months services like Pinterest and Instagram became leading companies. Networks are not really new. For generations people invested time taking part in networking events meeting others. The importance of building connections is intuitively obvious to everybody (Sattel 2014). Scientists of different areas and disciplines deal with the subject of networks. Networks are everywhere in relationships between people but also in cancer cells, in the brain, in mathematic graphs as well as in technical devices and of course in global economies. Solely in business and economy the diversity of networks is just incredible (Barabási 2015). The technical progress in current time revolutionized the possibilities of networking. The transport is cheaper, the infrastructures supreme, mobile telephony and not least the Internet have a great impact on the flexibility and quantity of networks today (Mogensen; Erikesen). The next economic revolution shall be called networked economy. It is not about Big Data or devices, but much more about people. People are the ones who continue to use technology and take part in the global ocean of data (Sharma 2015). Therefore for better understanding of network economy, it is useful to start describing networks or some network theories with regard to interpersonal relationships or networks between people.
