Since first appearing in 1998, Garner's Modern American Usage has established itself as the preeminent guide to the effective use of the English language. Brimming with witty, erudite essays on troublesome words and phrases, GMAU authoritatively shows how to avoid the countless pitfalls that await unwary writers and speakers whether the issues relate to grammar, punctuation, word choice, or pronunciation. An exciting new feature of this third edition is Garner's Language-Change Index, which registers where each disputed usage in modern English falls on a five-stage continuum from nonacceptability (to the language community as a whole) to acceptability, giving the book a consistent standard throughout. GMAU is the first usage guide ever to incorporate such a language-change index. The judgments are based both on Garner's own original research in linguistic corpora and on his analysis of hundreds of earlier studies. Another first in this edition is the panel of critical readers: 120-plus commentators who have helped Garner reassess and update the text, so that every page has been improved. Bryan A. Garner is a writer, grammarian, lexicographer, teacher, and lawyer. He has written professionally about English usage for more than 28 years, and his work has achieved widespread renown. David Foster Wallace proclaimed that Bryan Garner is a genius and William Safire called the book excellent. In fact, due to the strength of his work on GMAU, Garner was the grammarian asked to write the grammar-and-usage chapter for the venerable Chicago Manual of Style. His advice on language matters is second to none.

The Sacred, Unspoken Language has been translated from the knowledge of the healers that have been among us in spirit for thousands of years. Author the Seventhson was invited into their keep, and now they are the bridge back into this world to heal the Earth’s well-being by bringing everyone to the realization of our eternal selves. These sacred words will teach you how to communicate beyond words, beyond thought, beyond time, and beyond distance. We all communicate beyond our awareness; this is the language of the High Order from which we are inseparable. This is the language of healing the Mother Earth. Your spiritual self can feel energies all around you. They are very powerful and useful parts of this one language. When you connect to this realization that we present to you, everything happens through you automatically; you can watch our work when you know what to watch for. You are what is happening; you are the bridge of balance. It is the magic of the natural order—the cross of quantum entanglement. You don’t have to do anything but watch. The Sacred, Unspoken Language is the language between worlds.

Frankly, a killer doesn’t give a damn about offing Clark Gable—or Toby Peters—in this “fast-paced and colorful addition to a very successful series” (Publishers Weekly). On December 10, 1938, Atlanta burned again. In the back lot at David O. Selznick’s studio, sets from a dozen old pictures were pushed together and set ablaze to provide a backdrop for the climax of what Selznick promised to be the movie of the century: Gone with the Wind. Toby Peters, then just a studio security guard, was on hand to help keep the Confederate extras in line. When the fire was over, he found one of them dead, impaled on his own sword. Five years later, Peters scratches out a living as a private detective for Hollywood’s best known stars. Now it’s Clark Gable who needs his help. He’s been getting death threats. On the back of a cryptic poem, the sleuth finds a list of people on scene the night the extra died. Two are already dead, and the rest are next. Sure enough, one of those marked for death is Gable. The other is Toby Peters . . . “Nostalgic readers with a yen for the good old days . . . will find Kaminsky’s story entertaining, clever, eminently readable, and chock-full of snippets from Hollywood’s Golden Age.” —Booklist

For hundreds of years, Maya artists and scholars used hieroglyphs to record their history and culture. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, archaeologists, photographers, and artists recorded the Maya carvings that remained, often by transporting box cameras and plaster casts through the jungle on muleback. The New Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphs, Volume I: The Classic Period Inscriptions is a guide to all the known hieroglyphic symbols of the Classic Maya script. In the New Catalog Martha J. Macri and Matthew G. Looper have produced a valuable research tool based on the latest Mesoamerican scholarship. An essential resource for all students of Maya texts, the New Catalog is also accessible to nonspecialists with an interest in Mesoamerican cultures. Macri and Looper present the combined knowledge of the most reliable scholars in Maya epigraphy. They provide currently accepted syllabic and logographic values, a history of references to published discussions of each sign, and related lexical entries from dictionaries of Maya languages, all of which were compiled through the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project. This first volume of the New Catalog focuses on texts from the Classic Period (approximately 150-900 C.E.), which have been found on carved stone monuments, stucco wall panels, wooden lintels, carved and painted pottery, murals, and small objects of jadeite, shell, bone, and wood. The forthcoming second volume will describe the hieroglyphs of the three surviving Maya codices that date from later periods.

Word recognition is the component of reading which involves the identification of individual words. Together the two volumes of Visual Word Recognition offer a state-of-the-art overview of contemporary research from leading figures in the field. This first volume outlines established theory, new models and key experimental evidence used to investigate visual word recognition: lexical decision and word naming. It also considers methodological concerns: new developments in large databases, and how these have been applied to theoretical questions; and control considerations when dealing with words as stimuli. Finally, the book considers the visual-orthographic input to the word recognition system: from the left and right-hand sides of vision, through the processing of letters and their proximity, to the similarity and confusability of words, and the contribution of the spoken-phonological form of the word. The two volumes serve as a state-of-the-art, comprehensive overview of the field. They are essential reading for researchers of visual word recognition, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students of cognition and cognitive psychology, specifically the psychology of language and reading. They will also be of use to those working in education and speech-language therapy.

First of all other, I find No Grammar Tears very informative. What amazes me is the kind of dedication and patience Marthus-Adden spent in writing this book. This is because this kind of genre actually needs full attention. Truly, whatever he has written is precise and correct. I really admire his generosity of sharing his knowledge about English owing to the fact that English is his second language. What is good about the book is that the writer wrote it in a manner that readers can easily understand it. In other words, what makes this book different from the other English grammar books in the market is that it is more user-friendly, which means he wrote it in a manner that can easily be understood, especially by those who just learned English and want to learn more. Correctly put, this book is a guide to those who wants to learn English on their own. As a matter of fact, he has a knowledge check in every subject he has discussed in this book. He catered everything, especially in the part on how to construct sentences, which are very precise and which make it very easy to learn the book. He did not change anything at all in terms of the right way to speak and learn English, but instead he made it easier and more convenient for those people whose English is not their first language. In point of fact, he wrote this book not because he wants to show off to the world that he is a good grammarian, but because he wants to help those struggling to learn English. The book therefore deserves recognition because he is actually giving a favour to those who can't afford to have a private tutor to teach them how to speak English correctly. I must, in conclusion, admit that this book will really help those people who want to learn English language; those people who are striving to speak perfect English; and those people that English is their second language. I will therefore commend the author for this book.

In this bold new book, high-tech’s best-known strategist makes a seminal contribution to the search for meaning in a secular era. Two questions fundamental to human existence have always been the metaphysical “where do I fit in the grand scheme of things?” and the ethical “how should I behave?” Religion is no longer a source of answers for many people, and nothing has replaced it. Moore uses his signature framework-based approach to answer these questions, taking us on an intellectual roller coaster ride through physics, chemistry, biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Along the way, he builds a metaphorical ladder that leads from the big bang to the need for ethical action in our daily lives. Combining an extraordinary range of scholarship with an accessible and entertaining writing style, The Infinite Staircase: What the Universe Tells Us About Life, Ethics, and Mortality provides a coherent and unified platform for a full human life.
