In many industrial applications, the existing constraints mandate the use of controllers of low and fixed order while typically, modern methods of optimal control produce high-order controllers. The authors seek to start to bridge the resultant gap and present a novel methodology for the design of low-order controllers such as those of the P, PI and PID types. Written in a self-contained and tutorial fashion, this book first develops a fundamental result, generalizing a classical stability theorem – the Hermite–Biehler Theorem – and then applies it to designing controllers that are widely used in industry. It contains material on: • current techniques for PID controller design; • stabilization of linear time-invariant plants using PID controllers; • optimal design with PID controllers; • robust and non-fragile PID controller design; • stabilization of first-order systems with time delay; • constant-gain stabilization with desired damping • constant-gain stabilization of discrete-time plants.

The relay feedback test (RFT) has become a popular and efficient in process identification and automatic controller tuning. Non-parametric Tuning of PID Controllers couples new modifications of classical RFT with application-specific optimal tuning rules to form a non-parametric method of test-and-tuning. Test and tuning are coordinated through a set of common parameters so that a PID controller can obtain the desired gain or phase margins in a system exactly, even with unknown process dynamics. The concept of process-specific optimal tuning rules in the nonparametric setup, with corresponding tuning rules for flow, level pressure, and temperature control loops is presented in the text. Common problems of tuning accuracy based on parametric and non-parametric approaches are addressed. In addition, the text treats the parametric approach to tuning based on the modified RFT approach and the exact model of oscillations in the system under test using the locus of a perturbedrelay system (LPRS) method. Industrial loop tuning for distributed control systems using modified RFT is also described. Many of the problems of tuning rules optimization and identification with modified RFT are accompanied by MATLAB® code, downloadable from to allow the reader to duplicate the results. Non-parametric Tuning of PID Controllers is written for readers with previous knowledge of linear control and will be of interest to academic control researchers and graduate students and to practitioners working in a variety of chemical- mechanical- and process-engineering-related industries.

Control of Integral Processes with Dead Time provides a unified and coherent review of the various approaches devised for the control of integral processes, addressing the problem from different standpoints. In particular, the book treats the following topics: How to tune a PID controller and assess its performance; How to design a two-degree-of-freedom control scheme in order to deal with both the set-point following and load disturbance rejection tasks; How to modify the basic Smith predictor control scheme in order to cope with the presence of an integrator in the process; and how to address the presence of large process dead times. The methods are presented sequentially, highlighting the evolution of their rationale and implementation and thus clearly characterising them from both academic and industrial perspectives.

Industrial Process Identification and Control Design is devoted to advanced identification and control methods for the operation of continuous-time processes both with and without time delay, in industrial and chemical engineering practice. The simple and practical step- or relay-feedback test is employed when applying the proposed identification techniques, which are classified in terms of common industrial process type: open-loop stable; integrating; and unstable, respectively. Correspondingly, control system design and tuning models that follow are presented for single-input-single-output processes. Furthermore, new two-degree-of-freedom control strategies and cascade control system design methods are explored with reference to independently-improving, set-point tracking and load disturbance rejection. Decoupling, multi-loop, and decentralized control techniques for the operation of multiple-input-multiple-output processes are also detailed. Perfect tracking of a desire output trajectory is realized using iterative learning control in uncertain industrial batch processes. All the proposed methods are presented in an easy-to-follow style, illustrated by examples and practical applications. This book will be valuable for researchers in system identification and control theory, and will also be of interest to graduate control students from process, chemical, and electrical engineering backgrounds and to practising control engineers in the process industry.

Advances in Control Education 2003 - the 6th IFAC Symposium on Advances in Control Education was an international forum for scientists and practitioners involved in the field of control education to present their latest research, results and ideas. The symposium also aimed to disseminate knowledge and experience in alternative methods and approaches in education. In addition to three plenary lectures and the technical visit, the symposium included 12 regular sessions and panel discussion session on the topic "web- with or without." Technical sessions concentrated on new software tools in control education especially on the role of interaction in Control Engineering education, web-based systems and remote laboratories and on laboratory experiments. Presents and illustrates new approaches to the effective utilisation of new software tools in control engineering education Identifies the important role remote laboratories play in the development of control education

In control and signal processing, adaptation is a natural tool to cope with real-time changes in the dynamical behaviour of signals and systems. In this area, strongly connected with prediction and identification, there has been an increasing interest in switching and supervising methods. Moreover in recent years, special attention has been paid to the ideas evolving round the theory of statistical learning as a potential tool of improved adaptation. The IFAC workshop on Adaptation and Learning in Control and Signal Processing in 2001 gathered together experts in the field and interested researchers from universities and industry to present a full picture of the area. This proceedings volume presents papers covering the following subjects: Model reference and predictive control; Multiple model control; Adaptive control I/II; Adaptive control and learning; Learning; Adaptive control of nonlinear systems I/II; Supervisory control; Neural networks for control; PID design methods; Sliding mode; Adaptive filtering and estimation; Identification methods I/II.
