Marking the centenary of female suffrage, this definitive history charts women's fight for the vote through the lives of those who took part, in a timely celebration of an extraordinary struggle An Observer Pick of 2018 A Telegraph Book of 2018 A New Statesman Book of 2018 Between the death of Queen Victoria and the outbreak of the First World War, while the patriarchs of the Liberal and Tory parties vied for supremacy in parliament, the campaign for women's suffrage was fought with great flair and imagination in the public arena. Led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters Christabel and Sylvia, the suffragettes and their actions would come to define protest movements for generations to come. From their marches on Parliament and 10 Downing Street, to the selling of their paper, Votes for Women, through to the more militant activities of the Women's Social and Political Union, whose slogan 'Deeds Not Words!' resided over bombed pillar-boxes, acts of arson and the slashing of great works of art, the women who participated in the movement endured police brutality, assault, imprisonment and force-feeding, all in the relentless pursuit of one goal: the right to vote. A hundred years on, Diane Atkinson celebrates the lives of the women who answered the call to 'Rise Up'; a richly diverse group that spanned the divides of class and country, women of all ages who were determined to fight for what had been so long denied. Actresses to mill-workers, teachers to doctors, seamstresses to scientists, clerks, boot-makers and sweated workers, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English; a wealth of women's lives are brought together for the first time, in this meticulously researched, vividly rendered and truly defining biography of a movement.

In September 1909 Prime Minister Herbert Asquith came under attack during an event at Birmingham’s Bingley Hall. Members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) - or ‘suffragettes’ as the papers had named them - prevented from attending the meeting by a heavy police presence, threw roof slates at Asquith’s car to register their frustration. Ten women were arrested and imprisoned for their actions that day. This incident was one of many that marked the campaign for women’s suffrage in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Often overlooked compared to London or Manchester, the region was nonetheless an important hub of the suffrage movement, at the heart of both the constitutional campaign for reform and militant action by the suffragettes. It witnessed explosions, vandalism and arson, as well as university debates, rallies, and vigorous newspaper campaigns. It also had the tragic honour of being the first place where the policy of force-feeding hunger-striking suffragettes in prison was implemented. The part the city played in the fight for universal suffrage has been forgotten for too long. This book examines the suffrage campaign in Birmingham from its beginnings in the 19th century to the First World War, from both militant and constitutional perspectives, exploring the significant incidents that took place in the city and telling the stories of the women who campaigned relentlessly for their democratic right to vote.

The popular depiction of the women's suffrage movement is often London-based with 'suffragettes' chaining themselves to railings, marching for the cause, breaking windows, getting arrested and being forcibly fed by prison authorities. But the movement was more widespread than this might suggest. Throughout the country, as support grew, Scottish women were also playing an important part in the campaign for the parliamentary vote. This book tells the story of the women's suffrage movement in Scotland, from the early Victorian era to the winning of limited rights in 1918. It is a remarkable record of lively, articulate and strong-minded individuals, from all walks of life, united by the fact that they were not regarded as equal citizens - an injustice that led, for some, to uncharacteristic law-breaking and spells in prison.
