Researchers Fairchild and Boulay (2002, p. 4) provided terms such as "learning loss," "the summer gap," and the "summer setback" to describe the noticeable break in learning that occurs between the end of one school year and the start of the next. For the majority of children, summer results in a three-month vacation from structured learning activities. A number of researchers have studied the summer effect on student achievement, with many of their conclusions finding that student learning does decline during the summer months. Researchers have also established the degree of decline differs by socioeconomic status. A study conducted by Cooper (1996) described in the article Lost Summers, maintains that on average, summer vacations generate an annual reading achievement gap of nearly three months between students from the middle and lower-income families. In addition, research on the correlation between the volume of summer reading and summer reading setback found that children who read during the summer months were less likely to suffer from summer reading setback and more likely to have their achievement remain constant or increase slightly. The research supports the need for continued reading practice throughout the school year and during the summer months. Establishing a summer reading program would award the students in Hamilton Township, New Jersey supplementary learning time from which they all could benefit.

Get kids hooked on books! ""Summer Reading" is a timely look at the power of reading in the development of student literacy. It delivers a potent message to administrators, classroom teachers, reading specialists, and librarians to design summer reading programs based on a balanced view of reading instruction." "-Sheila Bostrom, Brush Schools, Colorado" Inspired by school-established summer reading camps designed to help struggling readers, Dr. Fay Shin and Dr. Stephen Krashen have built a research-based plan to guide schools in replicating this successful strategy. Written in a friendly style by two top scholars in literacy and ESL, "Summer Reading: Program and Evidence" provides a framework rooted in scientific data supporting how these programs succeed. By including standardized test scores as well as personal reflections from teachers and students on building effective summer reading camps, the authors motivate teachers to help students excel beyond the traditional classroom, promoting success from one year to the next. Why Summer Reading Matters Helps children become confident and competent readers. Encourages students to read books they enjoy and can access. Fosters teacher-student relationships and promotes students' motivation to engage with reading. Wouldn't it be a disgrace if we lost the brightest students now attending our nation's schools? Dr. Deborah L. Ruf establishes that there are far more highly gifted children than previously imagined, yet large numbers of very bright children are "never discovered" by their schools. Using 78 gifted and highly gifted children as her examples, she illustrates five levels of giftedness. Parents will be able to estimate which of the five levels of giftedness their child fits by comparing their own child's developmental milestones to those of the children described in the book. This book contains practical advice for parents, including how to find a school that works for your child. Book jacket.
