Emilio presents an engrossing story rich with samurai struggles and rich texture. He really knows how to weave a story! William J. Hall, author of The Worlds Most Haunted House: The True Story of the Bridgeport Poltergeist on Lindley Street The all-powerful emperor sends Sen-hi Sakeda, a female Samurai, on a diplomatic mission to America. She travels on a merchant ship across the sea from Japan, slaying pirates as she goes. She expects a moment of respite when she arrives in San Francisco. Instead, she is thrown in prison. Her diplomatic mission was a set-up to get her out of the emperors way. An Army officer, also trained in the Samurai way, soon rescues her. Together, they learn of a misguided plot by Native American chief, Raven Black, to usurp and take over the seat of United States military power in California. Sen-hi vows to stop Raven Black, but he has dark magic with unprecedented reach that makes him a difficult adversary. Sen-hi traverses the epic landmarks of the Western frontier as she is pursued and hunted by Raven Black and his minions of darkness. As battles rage, Sen-hi questions whether she should go to war or find a way to peace. Will her final decision lead to victory or bloody death? It all depends on whether she can survive the spirit of evil.

The Sword of the Spirit demonstrates a very easy method for memorizing scripture while enabling a deeper understanding of His Word. It will change you. You will establish a secure and solid foundation in Christ. You will become spiritually stronger as you face different challenges throughout life in your walk with the Lord. You will be set free from long-term sin, habits, and attitudes that have weighed you down and affected your overall Christian experience. You will develop a new way of thinking and discover that old ways are becoming a thing of the past. You will experience victory rather than defeat. You will move on to maturity more easily. A twenty-year-old has reached adulthood, but is not as mature as his father. The young adult should not be thinking or acting like a child that is five, ten, or thirteen years old. Nothing of those ages should influence his maturity level, or he will have difficulty making it in lifeand he will know stress very well. The same applies to us as Christians if we are not actively forsaking old ways and developing new ways. Topics include forgiveness, prayer, faith, resisting temptation, freedom from sin habits, peace, handling trials, renewing your mind, going forward, and allowing God to live through youjust to name a few of the very basic essentials for a solid platform in Christ. These scriptures will set you free from unnecessary burdens of self that hinder your moving forward in victory. As you memorize and meditate on these scriptures, you will be set free from years of emotional baggage that guide your feelings, thoughts, reactions, and decisions. You are renewing your mind and being transformed. It is what takes place in you by the working of the Holy Spirit, God Himself, as you memorize His Worda genuine new you! Memorizing the Bible is such a daunting task, that many people relegate it to the extremely spiritual and lose all hope of ever applying this wonderful tool to their own life. I so appreciate the humility and wisdom of Tena Marchand and this amazing tool for the believer. Without a doubt, these concepts and devotionals will help you accomplish this wonderful aspect of our faith. David had a revelation of this truth when he wrote, I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You (Psalms 119:11). Be blessed. A richly detailed, profoundly engrossing story of how religion has influenced American foreign relations, told through the stories of the men and women—from presidents to preachers—who have plotted the country’s course in the world. Ever since John Winthrop argued that the Puritans’ new home would be “a city upon a hill,” Americans’ role in the world has been shaped by their belief that God has something special in mind for them. But this is a story that historians have mostly ignored. Now, in the first authoritative work on the subject, Andrew Preston explores the major strains of religious fervor—liberal and conservative, pacifist and militant, internationalist and isolationist—that framed American thinking on international issues from the earliest colonial wars to the twenty-first century. He arrives at some startling conclusions, among them: Abraham Lincoln’s use of religion in the Civil War became the model for subsequent wars of humanitarian intervention; nineteenth-century Protestant missionaries made up the first NGO to advance a global human rights agenda; religious liberty was the centerpiece of Franklin Roosevelt’s strategy to bring the United States into World War II. From George Washington to George W. Bush, from the Puritans to the present, from the colonial wars to the Cold War, religion has been one of America’s most powerful sources of ideas about the wider world. When, just days after 9/11, George W. Bush described America as “a prayerful nation, a nation that prays to an almighty God for protection and for peace,” or when Barack Obama spoke of balancing the “just war and the imperatives of a just peace” in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, they were echoing four hundred years of religious rhetoric. Preston traces this echo back to its source. Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith is an unprecedented achievement: no one has yet attempted such a bold synthesis of American history. It is also a remarkable work of balance and fair-mindedness about one of the most fraught subjects in America.

This moment of perfect clarity that is the force behind all the traditional Japanese arts—from archery to flower arranging—is celebrated here in Dave Lowry's exploration of the common principles shared by calligraphy and the martial arts. Forty-two examples of Lowry's calligraphy, accompanied by his essays, show how the way of the brush reflects the strategic principles of the way of the sword. Each calligraphy represents a term from the martial arts—such as do, the way, or wa, harmony. The accompanying text amplifies our understanding of the term, what it meant to Japanese warriors, and what it means to practitioners of calligraphy and the martial arts today. What becomes clear is that these two seemingly unrelated disciplines actually partake of the same profound elemental spirit.

In 1830, with France's colonial empire in ruins, Charles X ordered his army to invade Ottoman Algiers. Victory did not salvage his regime from revolution, but it began the French conquest of Algeria, which was continued and consolidated by the succeeding July Monarchy. In By Sword and Plow, Jennifer E. Sessions explains why France chose first to conquer Algeria and then to transform it into its only large-scale settler colony. Deftly reconstructing the political culture of mid-nineteenth-century France, she also sheds light on policies whose long-term consequences remain a source of social, cultural, and political tensions in France and its former colony. In Sessions's view, French expansion in North Africa was rooted in contests over sovereignty and male citizenship in the wake of the Atlantic revolutions of the eighteenth century. The French monarchy embraced warfare as a means to legitimize new forms of rule, incorporating the Algerian army into royal iconography and public festivals. Colorful broadsides, songs, and plays depicted the men of the Armée d’Afrique as citizen soldiers. Social reformers and colonial theorists formulated plans to settle Algeria with European emigrants. The propaganda used to recruit settlers featured imagery celebrating Algeria's agricultural potential, but the male emigrants who responded were primarily poor, urban laborers who saw the colony as a place to exercise what they saw as their right to work. Generously illustrated with examples of this imperialist iconography, Sessions's work connects a wide-ranging culture of empire to specific policies of colonization during a pivotal period in the genesis of modern France.
