Sleeping rough, having sex in public and insulting the most powerful men in the world earned the ancient Cynic or 'dog' philosophers fame and infamy in antiquity and beyond. This book reveals that French Renaissance texts feature a rich and varied set of responses to the Dogs, including especially Diogenes of Sinope (4th century B.C.), whose life was a subversive performance combining wisdom and wisecracks. Cynicism is a special case in the renewal of interest in ancient philosophy at this time, owing to its transmission through jokes and anecdotes. The Cynics' curious combination of seduction and sedition goes a long way to account for both the excitement and the tension that they generate in Renaissance texts. Responses to the extreme and deliberately marginal philosophical stance of the Dogs cast light back on the mainstream, revealing cultural attitudes, tensions and uncertainties. Above all, representations of Cynicism constitute a site for the exploration of strange and paradoxical ideas in playful and humorous ways. This is true of both major writers, including Erasmus, Rabelais and Montaigne, and of dozens of other less well-known but fascinating figures. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of intellectual and literary history.

The religious faction of the GOP reacts to a deadly threat by transforming the party into a religious one. Starting with Georgia, they institute predator and community safety laws based upon church membership with the pastor assuming oversight of his flock. This involves housing, jobs, medical matters and pensions; he has total control. All residents not church affiliated are controlled and the Supreme Court rules that internal state laws are sacrosanct; thus other states enact similar laws. The result is that lobbyist money and business pandering is no longer necessary and the economy goes completely local meaning that out of state ownership ends, money stays local and there is a total withdrawal from global business and imports. Small town simple life America returns. The Christianizing movement spreads into other Republican controlled states. America isolates itself and solves the terrorist problem, full employment results and there is no housing problem.

This teeming compendium of tales assembles and classifies the abundant lore and storytelling prevalent in the French culture of southern Louisiana. This is the largest, most diverse, and best annotated collection of French-language tales ever published in the United States. Side by side are dual-language retellings--the Cajun French and its English translation--along with insightful commentaries. This volume reveals the long and lively heritage of the Louisiana folktale among French Creoles and Cajuns and shows how tale-telling in Louisiana through the years has remained vigorous and constantly changing. Some of the best storytellers of the present day are highlighted in biographical sketches and are identified by some of their best tales. Their repertory includes animal stories, magic stories, jokes, tall tales, Pascal (improvised) stories, and legendary tales--all of them colorful examples of Louisiana narrative at its best. Though greatly transformed since the French arrived on southern soil, the French oral tradition is alive and flourishing today. It is even more complex and varied than has been shown in previous studies, for revealed here are African influences as well as others that have been filtered from America's multicultural mainstream.

This manuscript is a collection of short stories that were originally prepared as part of a radio program that began in the early 1980’s as a summer informational and educational program for Tahoe area residents and visitors. Between 1982 and 1985, the author presented over a hundred live radio features about Tahoe’s history and the environment over Tahoe radio station KTHO. Lane returned to the radio airways in 1995, this time with Tahoe radio station KOWL-AM-1490, and has since broadcast over 3000 radio tales: “Don Lanes Tales of Tahoe.” The book is a distinctive collection of short stories about the colorful people, the characters, the dreamers and schemers that lived and worked in and around Lake Tahoe and the Sierras during the pioneer days of the Gold Rush and during the Comstock Years...people like Mark Twain, Joaquin Murrieta, and Lola Montez. It is also a collection of true stories about the unheralded pioneer men and women that were in their own simple way, inspiring. There are also tales about historic events in our region’s diverse history and off-beat tales about ghosts, bandits and even about true love. The collection of tales weaves serious history with light-hearted stories without editorializing or fictionalizing by the author, as the emphasis has been on historical integrity and authenticity. The stories have been gathered from historical journals, diaries, museum collections, archives and history records. The stories are both entertaining and educational, and hopefully will provide insight into a time long past, and provide a greater awareness and appreciation for the people that have been forgotten over the years as time has passed by.

Account of Plummer's development as a hunter, from boyhood exploits with lurcher and terrier to adulthood, with many interesting digressions. Includes chapters on cock-fighting and bird-catching, cooking and eating badgers, foxes and rats, hawks and hawking. Although Plummer often comes across as bonkers, many of his apparently eccentric actions, such as badger eating or covering himself with a concoction of badger grease and herbs, were experiments to establish the plausibility of claims made by other writers. Being perpetually surrounded by people incapable of sharing this pioneering spirit of enquiry seems the source of his restlessness and the driving force behind the hundreds of books he wrote in his lifetime. This is not to say that Plummer did not have deep problems, as he himself describes in Hancock's My Life with Lurchers.

In Pet Projects, Elizabeth Young joins an analysis of the representation of animals in nineteenth-century fiction, taxidermy, and the visual arts with a first-person reflection on her own scholarly journey. Centering on Margaret Marshall Saunders, a Canadian woman writer once famous for her animal novels, and incorporating Young’s own experience of a beloved animal’s illness, this study highlights the personal and intellectual stakes of a “pet project” of cultural criticism. Young assembles a broad archive of materials, beginning with Saunders’s novels and widening outward to include fiction, nonfiction, photography, and taxidermy. She coins the term “first-dog voice” to describe the narrative technique of novels, such as Saunders’s Beautiful Joe, written in the first person from the perspective of an animal. She connects this voice to contemporary political issues, revealing how animal fiction such as Saunders’s reanimates nineteenth-century writing about both feminism and slavery. Highlighting the prominence of taxidermy in the late nineteenth century, she suggests that Saunders transforms taxidermic techniques in surprising ways that provide new forms of authority for women. Young adapts Freud to analyze literary representations of mourning by and for animals, and she examines how Canadian writers, including Saunders, use animals to explore race, ethnicity, and national identity. Her wide-ranging investigation incorporates twenty-first as well as nineteenth-century works of literature and culture, including recent art using taxidermy and contemporary film. Throughout, she reflects on the tools she uses to craft her analyses, examining the state of scholarly fields from feminist criticism to animal studies. With a lively, first-person voice that highlights experiences usually concealed in academic studies by scholarly discourse—such as detours, zigzags, roadblocks, and personal experience—this unique and innovative book will delight animal enthusiasts and academics in the fields of animal studies, gender studies, American studies, and Canadian studies.

FOREWORD: FOR a period so protracted as to visibly shrink ones life expectancy, Nash Buckingham has been promising to take me hunting and or fishing to some of those fabulous old gunning and angling paradises about which he writes. Nash made the initial proposal soon after I had first read De Shootinest Genfman. For die benefit of those coming in late, this establishes the period as approximately the Glacial Age. During intervening eons, Nash has reaffirmed that solemn pledge. While partaking of Mingos hot-cat-an-taters at Doug Stampers Mermaid Tavern, for instance, he has lured on my panting novices hopes with oral paintings of waterfowling as practiced of yore at Beaver Dam, or, in more modern vein, at Section 16 along Bayou Lagrues pin oaks and ricelands. He has led me up into the high hills and shown me the Seven Temptations of quailing at the Ames plantation, Hugh Bucking hams farm, or in Bob Carriers plush coverts. Listening rapdy, Fve found myself actually changing into shooting togs at table, while Mingos shrimp gumbo, meandering its spoons rim, registered chameleon-like deposits along my necktie or in the upper-tier creases of my waistcoat. Manys the day, a much younger Paul basking in the sunshine of a benign and understanding Gamaliels smile, I have in minds eye centered a high-flying brace of greenheads, scored repeated rights and lefts on bobwhites zooming beyond Ethel and Edgar ...

The focus is on Martha’s Vineyard but the information, fishing tips, and stories about Island characters—Bob “Hawkeye” Jacobs jumping off Memorial Wharf to unsnag an albie he hooked—will sound familiar to anyone who has spent time in a community of fishermen. This informative and fun read answers the questions asked in local tackle shops, including the best spots to catch a striped bass on a fly rod—Lobsterville Beach—and rigging tackle for blues, fluke, black sea bass, false albacore, and bonito. Spin fishing, bottom fishing, and fly fishing are all covered. This book follows the island fishing seasons: rods appear on island trucks in April, a sign that schoolies have arrived, and they do not begin to disappear until the venerable Bass and Bluefish Derby, five weeks of single-minded pursuit of fish, ends in October. And there are tips on looking and talking the part . . . “handy phrases include any reference to a falling or rising tide and a rock, any rock, as long as you refer to it with a sense of authority so that the other person is unwilling to ask which rock for fear of seeming like a novice.” Martha’s Vineyard Fish Tales is a “how to” book that flows with the character and personality of a fishing-obsessed island off the coast of Massachusetts.
