Tourism is often seen as the world's peace industry. Yet while tourism may play a major role in post-conflict and post-disaster recovery, the sector can also be a trigger of crisis and disaster. This book examines the complex linkages between tourism, disaster and conflict through a series of case studies drawn mainly from the Asia-Pacific region.

This book addresses the growing academic concerns of the market-religion convergences in Asia. Bringing together a group of leading scholars from Asia, Europe, Australia and North America, it discusses multiple issues regarding religious commodifications and their consequences across Asia’s diverse religious traditions. Covering key issues in the anthropology and sociology of contemporary Asian religion, it draws theoretical implications for the study of religions in the light of the shift of religious institutions from traditional religious beliefs to material prosperity. The fact that religions compete with each other in a ‘market of faiths’ is also at the core of the analysis. The contributions show how ordinary people and religious institutions in Asia adjusted to, and negotiated with, the penetrative forces of a global market economy into the region’s changing religio-cultural landscapes. An excellent contribution to the growing demands of ethnographically and theoretically updated interpretations of Asian religions, Religious Commodifications in Asia will be of interest to scholars of Asian religion and new religious movements.

Erik Cohen, who has published extensively on Thai tourism, turns in this volume to some new, and as yet unexplored, topics. In a wide-ranging series of detailed case studies, he examines the intricacies of tourism dynamics on the micro-level in Thailand: tourism in the tsunami disaster; the prolonged struggle regarding the filming of "The Beach" on pristine Maya beach; the "postmodern" mitigation of the conflicting explanations of the Mekong fireballs; the transformation of a backpacker enclave in northern Thailand; the process by which the Thai elephant became a tourist plaything; the Thai cowboy sub-culture as a tourist attraction; the rapidly growing medical tourism to Thailand; and the manner Santa Claus was turned into a tourist on Thai Christmas cards. Each study is placed within a broader theoretical and comparative framework. The case studies are based on a wide variety of sources, including interviews, observations and printed material. The book is an original contribution to the anthropology of tourism, and to the growing field of Thai studies.

It has been revised and enhanced to capitalize on the strengths of the first and second editions while keeping it up-to-date with the field of psychiatry and epidemiology. This comprehensive publication now includes chapters on experimental epidemiology, gene-environment interactions, the use of case registries, eating disorders, suicide, childhood disorders and immigrant populations, and the epidemiology of a number of childhood disorders. As in the first and second editions, the objective is to provide a comprehensive, easy to understand overview of research methods for the non-specialist. The book is ideal for students of psychiatric epidemiology, psychiatric residents, general psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals. The book features a new editor, Peter Jones, from the University of Cambridge, who joins the successful US team of Ming Tsuang and Mauricio Tohen.

Of all the huge natural disasters that claimed the lives of thousands in Asia, the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 was the largest, estimated to have killed more than 230,000 people. The scope of damage brought about by this natural disaster urges focus on recovery and post-disaster reconstruction from several perspectives. Here we find an in-depth ethnography of Thailand and the role of culture and religion as an underpinning issue in post-disaster recovery. Following the post-tsunami recovery over five years, the book provides knowledge on socio-cultural responses from affected local communities after natural hazards, and is based on original material collected in Thailand after the 2004 tsunami. With a focus on how culture and religion interplay in the processes of building resilience and decreasing vulnerability, it gives a deeper understanding of how disasters are experienced and dealt with on a local level. It examines survivors’ experiences of rituals and ceremonies that became a part of the survivors’ lives in new ways after the tsunami, offering psychological reassurance and religious efficaciousness as well as communication links between themselves and the deceased. Using observations, narratives and material from in-depth interviews with survivors, relatives, relief workers, officials and Buddhist monks and nuns, this book contributes to the research on anthropology of disaster and to the development of research on cultural resilience and religion in post-disaster recovery. It will be of interest to scholars of Disaster Studies, Buddhist Studies and Asian Studies.

The Asia Pacific Security Outlook series provides assessments of the security environment, defense issues, and regional and global cooperation from the perspectives of countries that participate in the ASEAN Regional Forum. This ninth edition reports on the impact of such recent trends and events as the continuing slow-motion crisis over North Korea's nuclear program and other potential proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; further terrorist attacks combined with the forces of radical Islamism and regional rebellion that threaten numerous countries in the region; stresses in the relations of major regional powers, including China's relations with the United States (especially over Taiwan) and Japan; and new questions about the long-term future of a U.S. presence in the region. Adding the toll of natural disasters, disease, and persistent poverty, human security is under threat virtually throughout the region. Based on the work and expertise of a multinational team of security analysts and written for generalists and specialists alike, the Outlook is the most concise and authentic comparative work in this field.Contributors include Ross Cottrill (Australian Institute of International Affairs), Allen G. Sens (University of British Columbia), Martin Wagener (University of Trier, Germany), Philips Vermonte (Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Indonesia), Ken Jimbo (Japan Forum for International Relations), Kim Sung-han, (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ROK), Elina Noor (Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Malaysia), Bayarmagnai Toinkhuu (Institute for Strategic Studies, Mongolia), Peter Cozens (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand), Victor Cha (Georgetown University), Ronald J.
