An engaging picture book biography of Frances Perkins, the activist and first female United States cabinet member who created the Social Security program. From award-winning author Deborah Hopkinson. At 31, Frances Perkins witnessed the Triangle Waist Factory fire in 1911, one of the worst industrial disasters in United States history. The event forever changed her, and she dedicated herself to the fight for workers' rights. When she became Secretary of Labor in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration, she had the opportunity to make real her bold vision of a country where no one is left out and everyone is protected. Thanks to her efforts, we have the Social Security program, a move that changed Americans' lives for generations to come. Deborah Hopkinson's energetic text and Kristy Caldwell's appealing illustrations unite to tell Perkins' fascinating story as well as introduce early concepts of financial literacy, the Social Security Act, and the New Deal. Back matter features more information about Frances Perkins, Social Security, and resources for economic education.

“A scholarly, many-angled examination of what gratitude is and how it functions in our lives” from the bestselling author of The Rituals of Dinner (The New York Times). Known as an “anthropologist of everyday life,” Margaret Visser has won numerous awards for illuminating the unexpected meanings of everyday objects and rituals. Now she turns her keen eye to another custom so ubiquitous that it often escapes notice: saying “Thank you.” What do we really mean by these two simple words? This fascinating inquiry into all aspects of gratitude explores such topics as the unyielding determination of parents to teach their children to thank; the difference between speaking the words and feeling them; and the ways different cultures handle the complex matters of giving, receiving, and returning favors and presents. Visser elucidates the fundamental opposition in our own culture between gift-giving and commodity exchange, as well as the similarities between gratitude and its opposite, vengefulness. The Gift of Thanks considers cultural history, including the modern battle of social scientists to pin down the notion of thankfulness and account for it, and the newly awakened scientific interest in the biological and evolutionary roots of emotions. With characteristic wit and erudition, Visser once again reveals the extraordinary in the everyday. “An anthropological and philosophical account of how and why we give thanks. . . . All delivered in elegant, clear prose. A book to be thankful for—sympathetic to human foible, deeply learned and a pleasure to read.” —Kirkus Reviews “A delightful and graceful gift of a book, for which any fortunate recipient will be thankful.” —Publishers Weekly

You don't write because you want to say something; you write because you have something to say. F. Scott Fitzgerald (1945) It's with Fitzgerald's words kept as a guiding light, Richard J. SARGE Garwood writes his award winning commentary for the Westside Journal in Port Allen, LA. Taking on the mantle of the common citizen, Garwood's not afraid to tackle the tough issues of the day whether they're on the national, regional or local level. His honest and sometimes controversial approach to analyzing issues is garnered from years of practical street experience as a Deputy Sheriff and as a man willing to step to the frontlines to better assess and confront the problem. Displaying strong, solid writing (Louisiana Press Association) and occasionally showing poignancy and irreverence; he expresses the depth of his, and his reader's, life experiences, Garwood goes straight to the point.

The Thanks You Get by Corey B. Collins The Thanks You Get by Corey B. Collins is an exploration of human behavior and the driving force behind people’s actions. Hank Goodman is drawn into a mystery involving one of the wealthiest men in South Florida, Benjamin Beasley, and an old college acquaintance, the lovely Sonia Sanataria. The three become embroiled in the search for Beasley's long-lost brother, Barnaby, while navigating a myriad of disruptions in their path. Woven seamlessly throughout the novel is the theme of families, however defined, and the ties that bind them. Ultimately, the author hopes to encourage readers to contemplate whether there really is such a thing as coincidence and whether people, with all their faults, are naturally inclined to do the “right thing” as they define it in their lives.

A middle-aged widow, commuter of Amsterdam goes to Pakistan and weds a gentleman. Soon as the groom arrives into The Netherlands for a family reunion, he shockingly discovers in her a spoilt woman. The man tries to save his bond of marriage but the wronged woman neither wants to be tamed due to aspects of love, nor does she co-operate. Instead, she rather wants her man to close his eyes and to shut up his mouth if ever he wishes to become a legitimate resident in her country. The egoist man doesnt compromise on self-respect of a saintly husband and thus is thrown out into streets quite empty-handed and undocumented. Then he gets afraid of going back to his homeland predicting a social ridiculous. Years passed in such a dreary and stoned life-style that one day the city police arrests him against his unlawful status and surrenders him to the foreign police who when fails to deport, sets him free like a squeezed lemon after he having served a years custodial sentence. The author describes how a few Asian immigrants and their spoiled descendants who once get settled into the Western states . forget about their past of struggling. . trap and bait to their own continent/ country-fellows by showing on them a false fairyland. . and try to demoralize a Western society by using its culture as a shield or weapon to fulfill their own sensual curiosity which seems difficult to meet in their own sender lands. The author also regrets to inflexibility of the constitution and rejects to the old theory nobody is above law. He urges on the law-makers must to defend on humanitarian grounds to those noble outlanders who become illegal by some accident, or by a misfortune befell on them and not by fraud or cheating like do often the professional invaders or regular tress-passers breaking into some countrys barriers. The whole story convincingly draws a picture of human courage and endurance against all odds mixed in shadow of oppression and optimism by giving an entire message never quit. A compulsively true heart saga with a positive energy_ readable, thought-provoking and enjoyable.

For many years the author has, like most computer users, been receiving spam emails that he used to bin straight away - until one of the more outrageous ones caught his eye. Then he began to read them more carefully and, over the course of six years, selected outstanding examples of 'scam' literature. The author was especially attracted by the inventiveness of the senders, their very particular use of the English language, and the variety of the scams on offer. This ebook scrupulously presents those emails as they were received in terms of layout, vocabulary, and spelling. The author's only intervention has been to rearrange them in eight thematic chapters and for obvious reasons, to disable their various 'links'.Having worked on this project for years, the author discovered that a fair amount of people actually had taken the bait and been duped by these mails. Needless to say, the author did not send the replies that you are about to read. They have been added to serve as a light-hearted warning against tricksters, fraudsters, swindlers, et al, who seek to extract often significant sums of money from the unwary.

Forbes editor John Tamny uses entertaining stories from sports, movies, popular culture, and famous businesses to demonstrate the basic principles of economics. The Rolling Stones, the Dallas Cowboys, and Paris Hilton become examples of good and bad tax policy. The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, and The Sopranos reveal the downside of antitrust regulation, while the Michigan Wolverines’ 2007 loss to Appalachian State explains why regulations often fail to achieve their intended purpose. NBA star LeBron James’ exploits on the basketball court illustrate free trade and comparative advantage, while the cooking of chicken wings makes the case for a stable dollar. Popular Economics is an everyman’s guide to how money really works—a lesson politicians try (and fail) to grasp every day.
