This book examines the assessment and obligatory treatment programs for violent and sexually violent offenders – primarily adolescents and adults – diagnosed with cluster B personality disorder or a conduct disorder. It describes concepts, theories, and legal aspects as well as the psychological and neurobiological characteristics of violent and sexually violent offenders and forensic psychiatric patients. Chapters review treatment programs and provide guidelines for gathering additional information and formulating functional analyses to establish individual treatment plans. In addition, chapters offer treatment modules for violent offenders and sexually violent offenders and address specific problems that may be encountered in practice and how to overcome these problems. The book concludes with the editors’ recommendations for future research in offender assessment and rehabilitation. Topics featured in this book include: Heuristic models of aggressive and sexually aggressive behavior. The use of self-reporting questionnaires in offender populations. Reliable assessment instruments. The effectiveness of existing rehabilitation programs. Cognitive-behavioral treatment modules for violent and sexually violent offenders. Self-regulation and self-management skills to be used in rehabilitation programs. Facilitating treatment integrity in penitentiary and forensic psychiatric institutions. This book is the first study of how information flows linked early modern cities in Europe and the Ottoman Empire. It is as much about media of communication (i.e., how information circulated) as it is about a wide variety of messages of communication (i.e., different types of information including political news, local gossip, stories, etc.). In doing so, it argues that stories circulating in Ottoman oral culture in Istanbul could experience a second life inscribal and printed newspapers in London and Paris. One argument, therefore, is about the mechanics of communication, and how information flows represented a type of connectedness between Europe and theMiddle East long before modern communications. But there is a larger argument too about early modern globalization itself, namely that we cannot understand these types of flows and networks without also thinking about the role that individual people played in these processes. To this end, what is unique about the approach of this volume is that it tells the story about early modern communication through the prism of a single person's experience, namely William Trumbull.

The Art of Love celebrates the bi-millennium of Ovid's cycle of sophisticated and subversive didactic poems on love, traditionally assumed to have been brought to completion around AD 2. Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love) and Remedia Amoris (Cures for Love), which purport to teach young Roman men and women how to be good lovers, were partly responsible for the poet's exile from Rome under the emperor Augustus. None the less they exerted great influence over ancient and later love poetry. This is the first collection in English devoted to the poems, and brings together many of the leading figures in the field of Latin literature and Ovidian studies from the British Isles, Germany, Italy, and the United States. It offers a range of perspectives on the poetics, politics, and erotics of the poems, beginning with a critical survey of recent research, and concluding with papers on the ancient, medieval, and modern reception of the poems.

Clothing was used in the Middle Ages to mark religious, military, and chivalric orders, lepers, and prostitutes. The ostentatious display of luxury dress more specifically served as a means of self-definition for members of the ruling elite and the courtly lovers among them. In Courtly Love Undressed, E. Jane Burns unfolds the rich display of costly garments worn by amorous partners in literary texts and other cultural documents in the French High Middle Ages. Burns "reads through clothes" in lyric, romance, and didactic literary works, vernacular sermons, and sumptuary laws to show how courtly attire is used to negotiate desire, sexuality, and symbolic space as well as social class. Reading through clothes reveals that the expression of female desire, so often effaced in courtly lyric and romance, can be registered in the poetic deployment of fabric and adornment, and that gender is often configured along a sartorial continuum, rather than in terms of naturally derived categories of woman and man. The symbolic identification of the court itself as a hybrid crossing place between Europe and the East also emerges through Burns's reading of literary allusions to the trade, travel, and pilgrimage that brought luxury cloth to France.
