The Cadillac story is more than the story of a car company. It is, in many ways, the story of the American automobile industry itself—which, as much as any industry, drove America’s growth in the twentieth century and defined who we are as a people. For generations of Americans, Cadillac epitomized expansive prosperity. This illustrated history of Cadillac presents all the triumphs and failures of the marque’s last sixty years; from the good times, through the disastrous 1980s, and up to the current reconstitution of the brand.

“This book should be in your library…the book to satisfy your general interest and even create a steady interest by the time you finish reading”—SAH Journal “Fascinating…Readers will enjoy [Young’s] technical, thorough, and yet approachable writing style, as they follow this important American engine through its life, and come to understand its enduing legacy for all multi-level GM engines.”—Hemmings Classic Car. Cadillac has had a long history in the automotive marketplace as General Motors’ luxury car division. During the 1980s, Cadillac's management wanted to reestablish the brand as a leader in sophistication, innovation, refinement and prestige. Engineers conceived a new dual-overhead cam, four-valve-per-cylinder V-8 engine—the Northstar. This power plant was the heart of Cadillac’s Northstar System, which included a greatly improved suspension and braking system. The division redesigned its entire line to incorporate these new technologies for the 1990s and beyond. The Northstar was the last engine designed and built by Cadillac before the 2005 establishment of GM Powertrain, which took over engine design for all GM divisions. This history of the Northstar V-8 and the cars it powered covers the first generation front-wheel drive Northstar, the second generation rear-wheel drive model, and the supercharged version, along with racing history and the most collectible Northstar-powered Cadillacs.

For eleven years prior to World War II, Cadillac defied the norms of practicality and produced an extravagant supercar, a 16-cylinder luxury automobile that could be tailored to the customer’s every want. Big, thirsty and lavish, it cemented Cadillac’s place in the top tier of motoring magnificence. Each of the cars has its own colorful and fascinating story to tell. Driven by a life-long love of the V-16 and an interest in the history of his own car, the author has assembled more than 65 of these tales, gleaned from interviews, books, periodicals and documents, into a liberally illustrated book. Each story is shaped by the people a particular car touched, and the events they lived through together. All are an important part of our automotive and cultural history.

INTRODUCTION My name is David Albert Francis. However, I am known in the music world as “Panama” Francis, a name that was given to me by Roy Eldridge when I joined his band in 1939. I was born in Miami, Florida, on December 21, 1918, four days short of becoming a Christmas present to my parents. I must tell you that I am a stutterer. Sometime, when I get excited or try to make a point, my voice goes up about two octaves. I come across to some people as being angry but, believe me, this [what?] is how I get the words to flow. My facial expression might appear to you to be an angry expression. What is happening is that I am concentrating on getting the words to come out, without interruptions. I am sick now from twenty years of life on the board, riding on a bus for hours on end, eating unhealthy (and sometimes unsanitary?) food, and traveling 300 to 500 miles at a time without a bathroom break. The current health of bodies of my fellow musicians and I bear witness to the pain and suffering we experienced on the road. I am among many, many musicians who are paying now for these deplorable conditions on the road. We have serious health ailments that are directly attributable to what we experienced on the road and have negatively impacted the very days of our lives when we should be reaping the benefits of our long years of hard work. We are paying the price.

Lincoln's heritage is as rich as that of any car built anywhere in the world, and more impressive than all but a few. Generations of Americans have known it as the Car of Presidents; since the days of Franklin Roosevelt, the White House has exhibited a marked preference for Lincolns. This comprehensive, illustrated history describes in detail the successes and failures of the Lincoln from World War II up to the present-day Aviator. It discusses the forces in the market and in Ford Motor Company that have affected the Lincoln, and is a must read for anyone interested in this classic marque.

“Doc Granger’s biography is a fascinating series of stories that chronicle a life well-lived. Doc is the kind of strong, savvy, spiritual man who has helped make the American Dream a reality.” - Susan D. Brandenburg, Author of Sharecropper’s Son – The Story of Doc Garland Granger “Doc’s competitive nature inspires me. He is someone with great vision, and he gambles to get what he wants—he’ll go right to the edge! He’s not afraid of anything, and he loves to build something from nothing. He builds people as well or better than he builds businesses. He saw more in me than I saw in myself. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” - Nadine Gramling “Doc just sits there and talks quietly to people until they see things his way.” - Eddie Sparks “He gave us a boat called The Foxy Lady! Imagine that . . . the Baptist Church and The Foxy Lady! That was a lot of fun! With Doc’s help, the church was able to sell The Foxy Lady for $60,000, but for a while, it certainly caused a few waves!” -Dr. O. R. Rice SHARECROPPER’S SON – The Story of Doc Garland Granger His mother named him Doc, and though she never did say why, the name has served Doc Garland Granger very well for 94 years. Born in a sharecropper’s shack, Doc spent his childhood laboring in the cotton fields and tobacco patches of Robeson County, North Carolina. When, at age 17, he left the farm and set out to make his fortune, Doc carried with him enduring faith in God, indomitable entrepreneurial spirit and innate “tobacco patch wisdom.” With only a 4th grade education, the tall, handsome, sinewy son of a sharecropper was destined to become an icon of the steel industry, a successful hotelier, restaurateur, and real estate developer, a highly respected member of the Masonic Temple, a yachtsman, philanthropist and philosopher. Sharecropper’s Son is the inspiring story of a man who achieved success despite facing insurmountable challenges. Doc Granger is a man whose legacy of love is laced with laughter; whose homespun intelligence is like money in the bank; and whose heart has always been big enough to forgive, forge ahead and live life to the fullest.
