‘It won’t happen to me. That’s what I thought when I got on the plane to Venezuela. But it did – I got caught.’ Caught smuggling half a million euros’ worth of cocaine, Paul Keany was sexually assaulted by Venezuelan anti-drugs officers before being sentenced to eight years in the notorious Los Teques prison outside Caracas. There he was plunged into a nightmarish world of coke-fuelled killings, gun battles, stabbings, extortion and forced hunger strikes until finally, just over two years into his sentence, he gained early parole and embarked on a daring escape from South America . . . Aided by his extensive prison diaries, Keany reveals the true horror of life inside Los Teques: a shocking underworld behind bars where inmates pay protection money to stay alive, prostitutes do the rounds and vast amounts of cocaine are smuggled in for cell-block bosses to sell on to prisoners for huge profits. The Cocaine Diaries is a remarkable story, told by Keany with honesty, courage and even humour, despite knowing that every day behind bars might have been his last.

What happens inside Latin American prisons? How does the social organisation of prisoners relate to the political structures beyond the walls? Is it possible to resist corrupt penal regimes? In Prison Writing of Latin America, Joey Whitfield turns to those best placed to answer these questions: people who have been imprisoned themselves. Drawing on a century of material produced by Latin American prisoners from Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, Whitfield weaves readings of novels, memoirs and testimonial texts with social and political analysis. Rather than distinguishing between dictatorial and democratic periods of government, he shows that from the point of view of the prisoner, all states are authoritarian in nature. In the face of oppression, however, prisoners both 'political' and 'criminal' have found ways not only to resist but also to create alternative communities both real and imagined, sometimes in collaboration with each other.

Fourteen chapters will touch on the decline and fall of the American Spirit. From the defeat of our war on drugs to the greatest military defeat ever visited upon American soil 9-1-1 While politicians danced on their party platform shouting we are the strongest nation on the face of the earth. The box cutter of terror was being sharpened in a cave in the Hindu Kush. An over medicated nation preoccupied with Academy award winners that failed to hear the giant steps of fire worshipers. Osama Bin Laden has taught the Moslem world that the United States is a paper tiger and our giant war ships can be sunk by a dinghy. A Nation who has lost touch with its roots and is ripe for Europeanization. Supreme court judges who want us to be ruled by The Hague. Communism has temporarily failed in the Soviet Union but has found a wet nurse in US liberalism. The media controls the mind of many and is a willing accomplice to the lies and charades of the demoncrat party. The American military is the last shred of American decency left and has more enemies in the USA than in the world. Religion has been downsized and replaced with Oscar worship. Abortion claims two victims. The mother and the child. Both are harmed by two villains. The politician and the butcher. Special interest groups have to be driven out of the senate auction house. The largest campaign contribution in any form should not be greater than one dollar. Housewives should have to approve the budget. The three biggest killers of the spirit of America are drugs, divorce and demoncrats. The CYA, the FIB, the State department and the Pentagon all need a make over. They all failed us on 911. The first casualty should be PC lawyers. We need wartime consulters. It is not Bush's job to get Bin Laden it is theirs. Anyone who thinks that this war will not last at least ten more years is living under false pretenses. Going to Iraq has given us a forward staging area for the invasion of Iran. A great strategic move. We bypassed all the minefields from the UN to Paris to Turkey to Saudi. Soon all who witnessed the greatness of the United States will be gone and the liars will rewrite history. This book will bring you home to a God Loving Nation of Dads and Moms who kept freedom alive and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Never forget you are a special breed. You are an American and the spirit of America is the great spirit. The red in the banner is for blood spilled for you and me by young people who gave up all their tomorrows so we could stand together and keep the vow. You will enjoy the New York 50's humor. You will get sentimental. You will get good flashbacks. You will see this country in the eyes of one who saw how great we were. Yet poor by monetary standards but rich in children and oneness in love. We were the servants yet we were kings. We were drug free. We tried to be better. We kept the vow. We served God and country in war and peace.

Thruway Diaries Summary In Thruway Diaries, the Cadillac, that Black American symbol of achievement and success, having made it, provides no immunity to Big T and his family as they travel from Chicago to his native Mississippi in the early sixties and find themselves the target of police officers hell bent on making sure they know their place. It is even more unfortunate for Big T and his family that they are making the trip only a few years after Rosa Parks has refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, sparking a bus boycott that fuels the Civil Rights Movement. Even a car representing success can be seen as an affront to the status quo. God forbid one should display an ounce of visible pride, which could easily be interpreted as an act of defiance, an action that could land the unwary in a shallow grave. There are other places to vacationNew York and Chicagoto show off the Cadillac, as Big T knows and hears in no uncertain terms from his children. But home is where the heart is and millions of African Americans returned home each year to visit family and display their new found status. Some, like my Uncle Albert and Uncle John Dew, escaped Mississippi under the cover of darkness to avoid the penury system that held blacks in a state of economic servitude that was little better than slavery. So returning home in a modern car, sometimes a Cadillac as my Uncle Albert did, displaying the latest fashions, was an act of liberation, of financial independence, if not outright defiance. But Big T learns a harsh lesson that compels him to put his Cadillac on the blocks. Family comes first. Big Ts wife, Naomi, while willing to share in her husbands wishes to see his Mother, harbors a disturbing secret of her own from her days as a maid in a white household when the white master still took advantage of young black women without fear of being charged with sexual abuse. She has fled to Chicago to escape in the arms of Big T. Her experience leaves her on an emotional edge that is soothed only by the comfort of family, the distance from her native home and her hope for the future of her family. But what happens almost forty years later when a retired Big T pulls his Cadillac off the blocks and travels with his family to the Southeast, this time through Pennsylvania, Washington, D. C., and to Virginia? There are three generations instead of two in his Cadillac setting out to enjoy that dream vacation that includes a visit to the Washington, D. C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial to see a family member and to walk his granddaughter down the aisle. They could not be happier and they are very comfortable. The Cadillac Eldorado, after all, has been modernized and updated by grandson Tyrone, known also as Little T, himself an automotive design student at a prestigious Midwestern university. The past, the present, and the future are represented in Big Ts Cadillac. As with the typical family, they are not perfect, there is laughter and joking, stories from the past and some tension between mother and son about relationships, in this case an interracial one. But for Big T and Naomi, the golden years have been good to them. Naomi has hand stitched her granddaughters wedding dress. The dream wedding that she never had will be lived through her granddaughter as she walks down the aisle in the perfect dress, one that is without blemish. The wholesome family of law-abiding, God-fearing Americans heading on a vacation in their modernized Cadillac is driving into a very different world than the early sixties. It is world at the mercy of America's War on Drugs into which they are driving. In the security of their home and local community in which Big T travels, it mattered little to them that the United States Supreme Court has validated stop and frisk by police; that the Court has further ruled that any traffic offense committed by a driver, no matter how minor, is a legitimate legal basis

A woman recounts the horror of waking up paralyzed, unable to call for help. A man has a mini-stroke and refuses to listen to his doctor, only to suffer a disabling stroke soon after. A physician recalls watching a tiny baby in the throws of a stroke, convulsing violently. A survivor rejoices after finally crossing the street before the pedestrian lights change back. Blending such highly personal and moving stories with crystal clear medical commentary based on first-hand clinical experience, Dr. Olajide Williams demystifies this potentially devastating illness and provides a roadmap to recovery. Indeed, Dr. Williams shows that the majority of strokes are not only preventable, but also treatable. Through compelling stories of patients, survivors and caregivers, woven together by easy-to-understand medical explanations, Dr. Williams provides practical tips on preventing strokes with specific lifestyle prescriptions, on recognizing the different forms of strokes, on managing symptoms after stroke, and on overcoming the psychological burden of stroke. He also reviews the new clot-busting treatments, which have dramatically improved the recovery rate of stroke victims. Combining cutting-edge medicine with the gripping stories of patients, survivors, family members, and physicians, Stroke Diaries strikes a blow against the current public health crisis in stroke.

From the author of the best-selling novel 'The Cocaine Diaries' comes another true story of Dublin in the 1980s. The Party Animals were a wild bunch of womanising strippers. There was no dress code, no uniformity and no rehearsals. The lads were full of whiskey, drugs and pure adrenalin. This was 1980s Dublin and Ireland was in the height of the troubles. The Party Animals went both north and south of the border, for whoever was willing to pay top dollar, like mercenaries of the entertainment world. This story takes the reader through a two year journey of madness and mayhem, culminating in a stark warning by the paramilitaries to STOP.

This book is about my brother Kevin Courtney who died tragically aged 30 in 1998 during his time in Hong Kong. Kevin was a born traveller and upon his many travels he always kept a diary along with hundreds of photos and postcards sent home to his parents. Kevin, a huge risk taker and a go getter, always liked to travel to places off the beaten track and go explore places in which some people could only dream about. Were you a back packer in the nineties? Maybe you met him. This book includes his diaries of his first world trip from India to Asia, Australia (where he had a warrant out for his arrest and was also arrested on another matter), New Zealand and Northern America travelling for 450 days inclusive, his travels to Africa (which led to imprisonment/jailed). Central and Southern America and then the most dangerous of all, the trek through the Darien Gap Jungle. These diaries reflect his far from boring personality with his witty and very amusing tales. It shows his great sense for adventure, the risks he was willing to take, the dangerous gambles, the awkward situations he faced, he was just so fearless. This book will make you smile and shock you at the same time. This is his story of his travels in his own words.
