In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around. But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her-even from her new and trusted friends-the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

'An absolute must read.' J.R. Ward, No.1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. 'The grim reaper gets a shiny cook makeover in Jones's blazing hot debut... will appeal to fans of MaryJanice Davidson and Janet Evanovich.' Publisher's Weekly 'What's better than a bad-ass girl grim reaper who keeps us safe from hell hounds and demons? (The answer is obviously nothing.)' RT Book Reviews A typical day in the life of Charley Davidson involves cheating husbands, missing people, errant wives, philandering business owners, and oh yeah . . . demons, hell hounds, evil gods, and dead people. Lots and lots of dead people. As a part time Private Investigator and full-time Grim Reaper, Charley has to balance the good, the bad, the undead, and those who want her dead. Now Charley is learning to make peace with the fact that she is a goddess with all kinds of power and that her own daughter has been born to save the world from total destruction. The forces of hell are determined to see Charley banished forever to the darkest corners of another dimension but with the son of Satan himself as her husband, maybe Charley can find a way to have her happily ever after after all. 'I am furiously envious of Darynda Jones and rue the day she came up with this concept, damn her eyes. First Grave On The Right kidnapped me from the first paragraph, and didn't let go until the exceedingly yummy conclusion.' MaryJanice Davidson, New York Times bestselling author of the Undead series 'First Grave on the Right is smart, sharp and wickedly entertaining. Grab this one.' Democracy? The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment. There are three juridical attributes that inseparably belong to the citizen by right. These are: 1. Constitutional freedom, as the right of every citizen to have to obey no other law than that to which he has given his consent or approval. 2. Civil equality, as the right of the citizen to recognize no one as superior among the people in relation to himself...; and 3. Political independence, as the right to owe his existence and continuance in society not to the arbitrary will of another, but to his own rights and powers as a member of the commonwealth. —Science of the Right, 1797 Born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut, Robert Leon has traveled extensively in Mexico, Cuba, and Europe and has had jobs ranging from window decorating, sign painting, and mural painting to writing and sales. During World War II, he served in the Maritime Service and the U.S. Army. Currently living in California, he is married and the father of two. Democracy (b. 1984) is Mr. Leon's second novel.

An autobiography of a boy born in northwestern Iowa, who grew up partly on a dirt farm and partly in Sioux City as the son of a saloon-keeper. He went on to become a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first 15 years of the author's troubled life are given in a narrative that also serves as a history of Iowa during the 1930s and the early 1940s: the Depression, the farmer's rebellion, the milk way, the beer wars, card gambling, prostitution, and bootlegging. The balance of the author's life is shown in 100 annotated photographs.

The inexplicable kidnapping of young William Wylam is the opening shot of a very personal war for his father. Wylam pursues the kidnappers to India, and then into the snowclad vastness of Tibet. Caught up in a deadly international intrigue, the boy may now be held inside a hidden Buddhist monastery. With the beautiful Chindamani--not quite a goddess but no mere mortal--Wylam fights desperately to resue his son, seen by some as the reincarnation whose special role has been prophesied, used by others as a convenient pawn in a war of unfolding nightmares.

" Many of the essays represent the first serious critical attention paid to these writers. By examining the work of writers ranging from John Grisham to Bobbie Ann Mason, from Alice Walker to Cormac McCarthy, from Clyde Edgerton to Anne Tyler, the contributors reveal ways in which Southern fiction of the last twenty-five years differs from that which preceded it. In particular, these writers have explored a wider variety of settings and demonstrated a greater awareness of popular culture than earlier writers as they struggle with the human costs of rapid social change. This is the first volume to take an extensive look at the current generation of Southern writers, revealing what Hugh Holman has called "the fresh, the vital, and the new" in Southern literary culture.

America's bestselling frontier writer combines his unique skills as both an acknowledged historian and a consummate storyteller, blending historical fact with powerful human emotions to vividly recreate the past for his millions of readers. In his most ambitious novel to date, Terry C. Johnston combines all the drama and gut-wrenching tragedy to tell the story of the Nez Perce War as a whole cloth, a complex tapestry of deeply wrought emotions and bitter betrayal. Johnston breathes life into little-known characters from this terrifying conflict that will leap out of the past with compelling urgency-page after page, everyone you will meet were real people at the most crucial point of their lives. This is a story of individuals, knitted together in a compelling mosaic of emotions that will sweep you up and carry you along at a gallop. Despite one bloody skirmish after another, the Non-Treaty bands of Nez Perce still believe they can leave all the turmoil and killing behind in Idaho, fleeing General O.O. Howard's army across the Lolo Trail into Montana Territory. Looking Glass and the fighting chiefs lead their people to the "Place of the Ground Squirrels"-there to rest a few days while the women cut new lodgepoles, the children play for the first time in many weeks, and everyone celebrates leaving the war behind, rejoicing that they are on their way to the buffalo country. But there in the Big Hole of southwestern Montana, a chill, misty dawn covered the advance of Colonel John Gibbon's Seventh U.S. Infantry as they stole down upon the sleeping, unsuspecting village...unleashing the bloodiest onslaught of the Nez Perce War!

Like a kaleidoscope, the Caribbean world displays the vibrant colors of its diversity. Ethnic groups from four continents brought their customs and beliefs to this New World. The sheer number of African people brought to the Caribbean islands perpetuated through their spiritual vitality, the central role played by traditional religions in African life. Though they hadn't brought along the material support of their worship, they had buried in their memory other essential supports: memories of gods, of myths, rites, rhythms, tales, legends, proverbs, songs, dances, sculptures, all the fundamental vectors of their religious thought. Through a process of secularization, continuity, adaptation, creation, syncretism and synthesis, these elements helped vitalize the artistic, profane and sacred domains of Caribbean cultures. The book aims, on one hand, to deepen the knowledge of the composite character of Caribbean culture by showing the diversity of the cultural contributions of its African origins. On the other hand, through a census of popular traditions, artistic and literary, it demonstrates the fact that the secularization of indigenous and imported sacred forms led to the vitalization of contemporary artistic genres in the West Indies. This process thus articulates the dialectic of unity of the Caribbean and the New World. This book is part of a broad project on the theory of secularization of sacred forms and vitalization of artistic genres in the Caribbean. A second aspect deals with oral lore (myths, legends, tales), from a transnational and a translinguistic perspective.
