Xenophon (431-355 BC), son of Gryllus, of the deme Erchia of Athens, was a soldier, mercenary and an admirer of Socrates. He is known for his writings on the history of his own times, the sayings of Socrates, and the life of Greece. He participated in the expedition led by Cyrus the Younger against his older brother, the emperor Artaxerxes II of Persia, in 401 BC. His record of the entire expedition against the Persians and the journey home was titled Anabasis (The Expedition or The March Up Country). He was later exiled from Athens, most likely because he fought under the Spartan king Agesilaus against Athens at Coronea. The Spartans gave him property at Scillus, near Olympia in Elis, where he composed the Anabasis. His writings are often read by beginning students of the Greek language. His Hellenica is a major primary source for events in Greece from 411 to 362 BC, and his Socratic writings, preserved complete, are the only surviving representatives of the genre of Sokratikoi logoi other than the dialogues of Plato.

Excerpt from The First Four Books of Xenophon's Anabasis: With Notes, Adapted to the Latest Edition of Goodwin's Greek Grammar, and to Hadley's Greek Grammar (Revised by Allen) Tris volume contains the first four books of Xenophon's Anabasis, edited for the use of schools. These books include the mustering of the Greek army which invaded Persia in the service of Cyrus the Younger, the march into the Great King's country, the battle of Cunaxa, and the death of Cyrus and they carry the narrative of the retreat of the Ten Thousand down to their arrival at Trapezus after their perilous march from the neighborhood of Babylon. The editors believe that this is as much of the Anabasis as it is advisable for pupils to read before entering college, and no more than is needed to prepare them for the study of more difficult Greek prose. NO other work is, on the Whole, so well adapted to the needs of beginners in Greek as the Anabasis; but, if the standard of scholarship in our classical schools is ever to approach that of similar institutions in other countries, they must extend their teaching of Attic prose to other authors than Xenophon. Excerpt from The First Four Books of Xenophon's Anabasis: Literally Translated With Explanatory Notes Proxenus, a young friend Of Xenophon's, had been induced by the prospect Of renown and glory to raise a band of mercenaries, and enter the service Of Cyrus, the younger brother Of Artaxerxes, King Of Persia. While at Sardis he wrote to Xenophon urging him to cross over to Asia and join in a proposed expedition against the Pisidians. Xenophon was anxious to go, but first con sulted Socrates as to the advisability Of an Athenian entering into the service of a Per sian prince. Socrates advised Xenophon to consult the oracle at Delphi. Xenophon followed this advice, but being bent on join ing the expedition, merely asked to what gods he ought to sacrifice in order to make his undertaking a success. Socrates blamed him for not asking the. Oracle whether he ought to undertake the expedition, but agreed that inasmuch as his question had been definitely answered it would be proper for him to go. Xenophon accordingly joined Proxenus at Sardis about 401 B. C., and attaching himself to the army without any military appointment he accompanied it in its tedious march toward Babylon. Excerpt from The Anabasis of Xenophon: First Four Books; With Copious Notes, Introduction, Map of the Expedition and Retreat of the Ten Thousand, and a Full and Complete Lexicon; For the Use of Schools and Colleges In concluding this Preface, the undersigned may be _allowed to express the conviction, arising from an exami nation of the notes and papers of Professor Crosby, that the present work will be found to be a real and posi tive addition to the several excellent editions of the Anab asis already in print. The notes are full (especially on the first four books), as the author held that they ought to be, in a work such as the Anabasis is; they. Are, too, thoroughly analytical, and continually refer to the gram mar for exact and complete information on philological points; they are also very instructive, particularly in the occasional paragraphs of enlarged comment and criticism, such as young students need and appreciate, as well towards rendering the author's meaning more clear as towards impressing the valuable lessons taught by this, and in fact all history, ancient and modern. Excerpt from Xenophon's Anabasis: The First Four Books, With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary Mr. Frederick Stillman Morrison, teacher of Greek in the Hartford Public High School and editor of Greek Les sons for Beginners in this series, who went over the whole of the manuscript of the Notes, to see that they were adapted to the school-boy, offered many valuable suggestions and criticisms. I have had the help also of the sound schol arship and good judgment of Professor Campbell Bonner, of the University of Nashville, at many points in the prep aration of the Notes and in the reading of the whole of the galley-proofs. The proofs have had the benefit also of the watchful eyes of Mr. Morrison and of Assistant Professor Laird, of the University of Wisconsin. The book has had, further, the oversight of Professor Wright, of Harvard Uni versity, one of the editors-in-chief of this series. The First Four Books Of Xenophon's Anabasis: Literally Translated With Explanatory Notes By J. S. Watson This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
