The Great Republic aims to narrate and interpret American history around a central structure of several overarching themes: the reconciling of majority and minority interests in governing the body politic; the relations between America and the outer world; and the role of ideas in shaping American society and institutions.

In the first comprehensive reading of dozens of American literary and social culture classics, Tom Cronin, one of America’s most astute students of the American political tradition, tells the story of the American political experiment through the eyes of forty major novelists, from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Hunter S. Thompson. They have been moral and civic consciousness-raisers as we have navigated the zigs and zags, the successes and setbacks, and the slow awkward evolution of the American political experiment. Constitutional democracy, equal justice for all, the American Dream, and American Exceptionalism are all part of our country’s narrative. But, as Imagining a Great Republic explains, there has never been just a single American narrative—we have competing stories, just as we have competing American Dreams and competing ways of imagining a more perfect political union. Recognizing and understanding these competing values is a key part of being American. Cronin’s book explains how this is possible and why we should all be proud to be American.

Excerpt from The Great Republic The important action taken by the Continental Con gress in the passage of the Declaration of Independence was received with enthusiasm by the people of the newly created United States of America. On the 8th of July the independence of the country was proclaimed with great solemnity at Philadelphia, and welcomed by the people with the greatest exultation, artillery being fired, bonfires kindled, and other manifestations Of joy displayed. It was read to the army in New York on the 11th, and was received by them with wild acclamations. That evening the statue of King George, which had been erected in 1770, was dragged through the streets by a party of soi diers, and a resolution taken to convert into bullets the lead of which it was made. This riotous proceeding was severely rebuked by Washington. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
