When Edward Prendick is shipwrecked on a mysterious island in the South Pacific, he meets the infamous Dr. Moreau, a physiologist who was forced to leave England because of his repulsive experiments on animals. On the island, screams echo from the laboratory in the middle of the night, and strange beasts prowl the jungle. Prendick discovers that the doctor is still performing horrific experiments, trying to turn animals into human beings. Terrified, Prendick wants to escape but soon finds himself seeking justice for the half-human subjects of Dr. Moreau's experiments. These experiences force Prendick to consider the relationship between science and ethics. First published in 1896, this is an unabridged version of English author H. G. Wells's iconic science fiction novel.

Sciences such as gene-splicing and bioengineering are foretold in Wells's haunting visionary fable. The book created a sensation when it first appeared in 1896, and Wells himself later deemed the work "an exercise in youthful blasphemy"! However, when you have science fiction, adventure, and horror, how can you go wrong? A shipwreck victim is stranded on an island run by the mysterious Dr. Moreau, who seems hospitable enough, but the jungle is full of menacing shapes -- and what about those ominous references to the House of Pain? We gradually learn of Moreau's unholy experiments and worry that the hero will never escape. The Pronouncer of the Law is as creepy as in all the filmed adaptations ("Are we not men?").

The Island of Doctor Moreau is the narration of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man who finds himself on a mysterious island full of humanoid animal creatures. He comes to find that these creatures are the work of Dr. Moreau, a man who experiments in vivisection, and his assistant Montgomery. The story of Dr. Moreau's island began as an article in the January, 1895 issue of Saturday Review. It was later adapted into a novel. Its themes reflect concerns growing in the society of the day, like the cruelty of vivisection, degenerationism, and the theory of evolution.

ABSTRACT: Although The Island of Doctor Moreau can be read as advancing charges of feminine animality and women's unrestrained sexuality, or that animals and women share a closer connection than do men to either, these interpretations fail to incorporate an understanding of science fiction and the historical context of the "woman question." This analysis of The Island of Doctor Moreau argues for a reading as science fiction, as reflecting contemporary popular science, and as commentary on the New Women of 1890s England. Wells' story installs the feminine as a force disrupting the seemingly controlled laboratory island of Dr. Moreau. It also participates in the feminizing of the scientific object, and expresses men's fear of the havoc that would be unleashed by an enfranchised New Woman. By understanding the relationship between the New Woman and The Island of Doctor Moreau, we can better see English men's anxieties manifesting in contemporary popular science of Wells' story and the anti-women's rights movement.
