A classic of science fiction and a dark meditation on Darwinian thought in the late Victorian period, The Island of Doctor Moreau explores the possibility of civilization as a constraint imposed on savage human nature. The protagonist, Edward Prendick, finds himself stranded on an island with the notorious Doctor Moreau, whose experiments on the island’s humans and animals result in unspeakable horrors. The critical introduction to this Broadview Edition gives particular emphasis to Wells’s hostility towards religion as well as his thorough knowledge of the Darwinian thought of his time. Appendices provide passages from Darwin and Huxley related to Wells’s early writing; in addition, excerpts from other writers illustrate late-nineteenth-century anxieties about social degeneration.

The Island of Doctor Moreau is the narration of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man who finds himself on a mysterious island full of humanoid animal creatures. He comes to find that these creatures are the work of Dr. Moreau, a man who experiments in vivisection, and his assistant Montgomery. The story of Dr. Moreau's island began as an article in the January, 1895 issue of Saturday Review. It was later adapted into a novel. Its themes reflect concerns growing in the society of the day, like the cruelty of vivisection, degenerationism, and the theory of evolution.

H.G. Wells (1866-1946) wrote some of the great classics of speculative fiction in English, including The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), which might be said to be about unholy genetics. The work's biological and sociopolitical ideas are still current (such were the range and depth of Wells' ideas). Wells continued to work on Doctor Moreau for nearly thirty years after its initial publication in London (the New York first edition added a subtitle A Possibility), finally letting go of the work after the publication of the Atlantic Edition in 1924. Annotated by the premier Wellsian scholar, this is an exhaustive critical edition, examining the historical, medical, philosophical and literary contexts of the story.

ABSTRACT: Although The Island of Doctor Moreau can be read as advancing charges of feminine animality and women's unrestrained sexuality, or that animals and women share a closer connection than do men to either, these interpretations fail to incorporate an understanding of science fiction and the historical context of the "woman question." This analysis of The Island of Doctor Moreau argues for a reading as science fiction, as reflecting contemporary popular science, and as commentary on the New Women of 1890s England. Wells' story installs the feminine as a force disrupting the seemingly controlled laboratory island of Dr. Moreau. It also participates in the feminizing of the scientific object, and expresses men's fear of the havoc that would be unleashed by an enfranchised New Woman. By understanding the relationship between the New Woman and The Island of Doctor Moreau, we can better see English men's anxieties manifesting in contemporary popular science of Wells' story and the anti-women's rights movement.

While "The Island of Doctor Moreau" has not achieved the popularity of some of H.G. Wells' other science fiction stories, those who have read it often describe it as one of the his greatest works. Experience a tale with themes as relevant today as they were in the Victorian Era. The narration of the story, which is conducted by the stranded scientist Edward Prendick, will keep you at the edge of your seat, enthralled, disgusted and curious at the same time. What kind of experiments is the infamous Doctor Moreau conducting in the seclusion of his personal island? Who are the beast-like people Prendick encounters in the jungle of the island? Evolution, devolution, animal cruelty and the state of the human mind are themes Wells flawlessly interweaves into "The Island of Doctor Moreau."
