A Cuban immigrant comes of age in NYC in this autobiographical debut novel by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. New York City, 1944. Hector Santinio is the younger son of Cuban immigrants who share an apartment with relatives in Spanish Harlem. Caught between his mother’s anxieties and his father’s macho expectations, Hector struggles to find an identity for himself while wrestling with both cultural and personal isolation. Meanwhile, his older brother Horatio falls into the womanizing and drinking pattern demonstrated by their father. This is a sweeping, poignant tale of the immigrant experience in New York—as a homeland the brothers have never visited exerts an undeniable influence on them both. A debut novel “marked by eloquently trimmed prose, great assurance, and uncompromising darkness,” Our House in the Last World demonstrates the storytelling powers that would later win Oscar Hijuelos so much acclaim (Kirkus).

COUNTERSTRIKE When the alien war engulfing a distant planet spilled to Earth through a network of hidden portals, humankind was plunged into an apocalyptic, generations-old conflict between the Plysserians and the Chodrecai. Now, months after Earth’s most powerful military forces formed a tenuous alliance with the Plysserians and countered a devastating, three-pronged Chodrecai offensive, alien survivors continue to wreak havoc on a shell-shocked Earth. Martial law and civil unrest run rampant. Resistance cells and pockets of Chodrecai sympathizers are gathering strength. And two U.S. Marines—Sergeant Major Simon DiCarlo and Sergeant Belinda Russell— remain trapped on the alien planet of Jontashreena. Now, as human and Plysserian scientists and engineers race to unlock the intergalactic portals and harvest alien technology, Earth prepares for the most explosive battle for its existence. Joining the war effort are recruits like young Colin Laney, who will advance from Marine boot camp to the forefront of a massive invasion on alien terrain—with the fate of two worlds hanging in the balance.

Much of my childhood memories prevail in my mind. I remember every daunting occurrence that restricted or spoiled my youthful enjoyment. It could be because my early upbringing in Germany was during the worst of times in the last century, the last World War. That wartime was so testing that a small child like me could mature faster to withstand the challenges of staying alive. I survived the brutal war in the caring hands of Mama as a refugee with hunger, sickness, and ever-changing natural hardships. My memories go back to my Papa, a high-ranking Nazi officer who had no respect for his wife and his little girl; my brother, who was born a Hitler baby and whom Papa cherished; Irmgard, Mama's Jewish girlfriend that she hid from the Nazi's, including from Papa; my loving Grandpa and his discomforting second wife, who lived on a beautiful farm bordering a green forest close to where my aunt and cousins lived. The war fragmented us apart. I consider it a miracle to have lived and grown through that brutal war, surviving to tell the story to the present generation. My journey to America was paved by the outcome of the war itself. Leaving my memories behind, I entered into a new world with my loving husband beside me. I thrived and climbed mountains to succeed to make all things possible. It made me become the person I am today.

An enlightening investigation of the Pleistocene’s dual character as a geologic time—and as a cultural idea The Pleistocene is the epoch of geologic time closest to our own. It’s a time of ice ages, global migrations, and mass extinctions—of woolly rhinos, mammoths, giant ground sloths, and not least early species of Homo. It’s the world that created ours. But outside that environmental story there exists a parallel narrative that describes how our ideas about the Pleistocene have emerged. This story explains the place of the Pleistocene in shaping intellectual culture, and the role of a rapidly evolving culture in creating the idea of the Pleistocene and in establishing its dimensions. This second story addresses how the epoch, its Earth-shaping events, and its creatures, both those that survived and those that disappeared, helped kindle new sciences and a new origins story as the sciences split from the humanities as a way of looking at the past. Ultimately, it is the story of how the dominant creature to emerge from the frost-and-fire world of the Pleistocene came to understand its place in the scheme of things. A remarkable synthesis of science and history, The Last Lost World describes the world that made our modern one.

When man cannot breathe his air anymore? Or drink the water on earth? This short book is an observation of our planet in the 21st century and a glimpse at perhaps the last pieces of the world. Of an elemental nature, at times, poetical and inspired by art and exhibits by the artist and author. Apocalyptic fiction born out of reality. (Sample from the book) entitled: ‘Packet Salmon’ “Farm me in a small space and kill me when you are ready. Send me on a journey wrapped in plastic sleeves. Stick me on a lorry for all you to receive. Keep your birds in cages, and keep your fish in tanks. To show all man and beast, how high the human ranks.” ‘Burnt, Still Bleeding’ “ They had wealth, they had property, they had standing. Now they do not have wealth, or property and they are not standing. They are burnt and still bleeding.” It is a simple book about all that sustains us, hard fact woven into fiction. About Trees, Water, Air, Earth, Fire, Light and People. Matthew Franklin is a writer and sculptor of 25 years, selling a number of books under pseudonyms. He does not engage in social media and has a website listing his artwork. He has travelled widely, creating sculptures, treehouses and books, often handmade. Now settled in England, since 2017, he no longer travels abroad by toxic means and lives with his partner and two children. They aim to build a low impact dwelling and continue to grow much of their own food. His work has caught the attention of both local and mainstream radio and television and he has been highly commissioned for his often recycled material pieces. With strong environmental themes, he has exhibited professionally for many years and his books (under pseudonym) have been in Waterstones books and discussed by the BBC. Very much from an eco movement, prior to being an artist and writer, he had several bicycle shops. In recent years, his work has become quite sought after and collectable.

We undertake an extended discussion of the latest developments about the existing and new estimation methods of the shadow economy. New results on the shadow economy for 158 countries all over the world are presented over 1991 to 2015. Strengths and weaknesses of these methods are assessed and a critical comparison and evaluation of the methods is carried out. The average size of the shadow economy of the 158 countries over 1991 to 2015 is 31.9 percent. The largest ones are Zimbabwe with 60.6 percent, and Bolivia with 62.3 percent of GDP. The lowest ones are Austria with 8.9 percent, and Switzerland with 7.2 percent. The new methods, especially the new macro method, Currency Demand Approach (CDA) and Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) in a structured hybrid-model based estimation procedure, are promising approaches from an econometric standpoint, alongside some new micro estimates. These estimations come quite close to others used by statistical offices or based on surveys.

Alexander Dugin traces the geopolitical development of Russia from its origins in Kievan Rus and the Russian Empire, through the peak of its global influence during the Soviet era, and finally to the current presidency of Vladimir Putin. Dugin sees Russia as the primary geopolitical pole of the land-based civilizations of the world, forever destined to be in conflict with the sea-based civilizations. At one time the pole of the seafaring civilizations was the British Empire; today it is represented by the United States and its NATO allies. Russia can only fulfill its geopolitical mission by remaining in opposition to the sea powers. Today, according to Dugin, this conflict is not only geopolitical in scope, but also ideological: Russia is the primary representative and defender of traditional values and idealism, whereas the West stands for the values of liberalism and the market-driven society. Whereas Russia began to lose sight of its mission during the 1990s and threatened to succumb to domination by the Western powers, Dugin believes that Putin has begun to correct its course and return Russia to her proper place. But the struggle is far from over: while progress has been made, Russia remains torn between its traditional nature and the temptations of globalism and Westernization, and its enemies undermine it at every turn. Dugin makes the case that it is only by remaining true to the Eurasian path that Russia can survive and flourish in any genuine sense – otherwise it will be reduced to a servile and secondary place in the world, and the forces of liberalism will dominate the world, unopposed.
