Dracula, the blood-thirsty Transylvanian who terrorized England, was a character in an 1897 horror novel. However, the author, Bram Stoker, based his infamous creature on a real-life prince from the 1400s named Vlad III. Though Vlad wasn't a vampire, he was known for some very gory exploits. Legends of vampires stretch back even further than this. Thrilled readers will devour this legend, its possible sources, and details about its contribution to popular culture. Spooky photographs and illustrations set the mood and enhance the spine-tingling text.

Dracula and the Man Behind the Legend He has been called by many names. He was the Prince, Vlad III; he was the Dark Lord, Vlad Dracula, and the terrible scourge, Vlad the Impaler. He had some rather heady titles considering he was just a minor ruler of a small, remote territory in southeastern Europe called Wallachia. But Vlad Dracula's land and reign, although small, would prove to be pivotal since his territory had become the stepping stone and beachhead of invasion for the mightiest Islamic force the world has ever known; the Ottoman Empire. Vlad's tiny kingdom was one of the last Balkan countries to be conquered by the Ottoman Turks. It had been reduced to a vassal status and forced to pay tribute to the sultan, but it still maintained its autonomy. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Vlad was born into a world where double-dealing and Machiavellian strategy were second nature. During his early reign, he was fully capable of paying the Ottoman sultan tribute while simultaneously promising the Christian powers of Hungary and Austria that he would soon join them in a holy war against the Ottoman Empire. As a matter of survival - for himself and his people - Vlad had become quite accustomed to probing others for weaknesses. If he felt that the Ottomans were in a strong position, he would play the loyal subject and allow them to march right through his lands in their quest to subdue Christians. But if he felt that the Christians to the north were getting stronger, he wouldn't hesitate to side with them and turn on his Turkish masters. In addition to all this political intrigue and maneuvering, Vlad also didn't hesitate to kill his citizens for the smallest infraction or perceived disrespect. He was a truly startling - and disturbing - figure. Fast forward to some 400 years later. British author Bram Stoker took the frightful figure of Vlad the Impaler and imbued him with all the supernatural mystique and powers of dark Romanian folklore to create the figure of Count Dracula, which most of us are familiar with from literature, TV, and film. This book seeks to explore every single aspect of this character that did exist historically, and has been alternatively despised, lionized, fabricated, and made fodder for conspiracy theories. We leave no stone unturned as we delve into the depths of everything Dracula! Scroll back up and order your copy today!

Most of the vast audience attracted to the subject of Dracula know him only in his fictional, one-dimensional form: vampire! Yet the truth behind the historical character--voevode, warlord--of 15th C. Romania is at least as equally fascinating as any contrived account of his supernatural persona. Vlad Dracula faithfully follows his life story as hostage, fugitive, prince, and prisoner, as well as his legend. His principality of Wallachia was caught between two voracious predators: the kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman empire. They tried to break Dracula with overwhelming force and terror. But Dracula turned their own tactics against them, and against criminals and factions in his own land, earning the name Tepes--The Impaler--in the process. He was a strange mix of husband, father, soldier, statesman, and berserker. He annihilated 50,000 people--one-tenth of his own population. Cursed by his native Orthodox Christian Church, he indeed evolved into a legend. But even today he is Romania's Robin Hood.

Nestled deep in the woods along a wooded path is an abandoned century old crypt that two girls will stumble upon, and curiosity gets the best of them, but they will never live to tell about it. It all started when these two friends Alicia and Mary Beth accepted a dare to see if the legend of Drac Von Stoller the prince of darkness was fiction or fantasy. The two girls thought it was a joke and laughed all the way out the door off to what they thought was a waste of time to a night of terror. There was one stipulation about the dare and if they didn’t abide by it they would be humiliated at school the next day. The stipulation was that they had to go at sundown and take nothing with them but themselves and a flashlight. Just to make sure the two girls arrived at their destination at sundown the other girls that made the dare drove them to their destination and spent the night in the car to await their arrival with the news of their findings. Alicia and Mary Beth peered out their passenger windows in the back seat of the car and the fear of the unknown was starting to set in as sun was dropping rapidly off in the distance but they made a dare and they were not about to back out now and be they laughing stock of their classmates the next morning. The car arrived at the right moment as darkness filled the sky. Alicia and Mary Beth looked at each other with fear in their eyes but suppressed their fear and turned to the other girls in the front seat of the car and gave their best performance of courage and grabbed their flashlights and said lets go check out this fictitious legend and put it to rest once and for all and have the last laugh. One of the girls in the car yelled out as Alicia and Mary Beth headed off into the woods, “You just might want to take a cross and a stake with you in case you see a vampire?” the girls in the car laughed hysterically as Alicia and Mary Beth entered the woods with the unknown just moments away. As Alicia and Mary Beth got deeper into the woods the wind was picking up and thunder could be heard off in the distance. These two girls were on a mission and just kept pressing forward and hurried in hopes this would all be over soon and they could get back home and never come back to these woods again whether or not it was all made up. As the two girls were walking along Alicia tripped over a rock and fell down in front of a crypt that was surrounded by thick brush. Mary Beth shined her flashlight on the crypt and said “Look! Alicia what is a crypt doing out here in the middle of nowhere?” “I don’t know? Why don’t we go back and get the girls and investigate a little further,” but before Alicia could get off the ground a tall dark figure emerged from the crypt and was standing in front of her and said “Are you looking for me?”

A study of the influence Whitby exerted upon the planning stages and finalised form of Stoker's Gothic masterpiece, 'Dracula', 'Birth of a Legend' examines Stoker's visit to the town on the summer of 1890 and the discoveries he made there, including his first encounter with the name Dracula, in an obscure old fictional transformation of the 1885 wreck of the Russian ship Dmitry into the Demeter, the doomed schooner which brings Dracula to England. In order to provide a context the events of 1890 are presented within the framework of Stoker's life and the continuing Dracula phenomenon. The book also includes the full 1897 text of Dracula the novel perhaps one of popular English literatures finest works.

The First Adaptation Advised by the Stoker Family since 1927s Broadway Premiere Starring Bela Lugosi! In the early nineteen twenties, Florence Balcombe, widow of DRACULAs author, gave authorization to theatrical producer Hamilton Deane to co-opt Bram Stokers novel for a stage play. For years since, the story has been adapted into dramatic form, but never in collaboration with the family Stoker. Until now. DRACULA of Transylvania made its world premiere in 2013. This dramatization by Christofer Cook, with Dacre Stokers advisement, gives the whole story in all its beautifully- terrifying grandeur. An intricately crafted script, Dracula of Transylvania offers a satisfying live alternative to decades of cinematic gore and computer-generated mayhemwithout sacrificing suspense, thrills, chills, or good old-fashioned action. - August Krickel SC Press Association 2014 Award Recipient DRACULA, of Transylvania is no milk-toast, drawing-room, murder mystery. This is Bram Stokers complete saga. A horror-adventure that takes us from the wilds of the dark, mountainous Carpathians to the cobblestone streets of polite London. The epic play is perfect for professional, regional, and community theatres. But, beware! This version of the venerable yarn has fangs, sharp as stakes!
