The quantity of journalism produced during World War I was unlike anything the then-budding mass media had ever seen. Correspondents at the front were dispatching voluminous reports on a daily basis, and though much of it was subject to censorship, it all eventually became available. It remains the most extraordinary firsthand look at the war that we have. Published immediately after the cessation of hostilities and compiled from those original journalistic sources-American, British, French, German, and others-this is an astonishing contemporary perspective on the Great War. This replica of the first 1919 edition includes all the original maps, photos, and illustrations, lending an even greater immediacy to readers a century later. Volume IV covers December 1916 through March 1918, from the entrance of the United States into the conflict through the last of the zeppelin raids on the Western Front. American journalist and historian FRANCIS WHITING HALSEY (1851-1919) was literary editor of The New York Times from 1892 through 1896. He wrote and lectured extensively on history; his works include, as editor, the two-volume Great Epochs in American History Described by Famous Writers, From Columbus to Roosevelt (1912), and, as writer, the 10-volume Seeing Europe with Famous Authors (1914).

Excerpt from The Literary Digest, History of the World War, Compiled From Original and Contemporary Sources, Vol. 10 of 10: American, British, French, German, and Others Of him and of the present work, George Douglas said in The San Francisco Bulletin - Twenty years from now Mr. Hal sey's work will stand with no more needed than the addition Of some necessary foot-notes as more and more of the truth is divulged. The main thing is to get intelligently interested in the war, interested in something more than its butchery tho that should be ever present in the mind. People who forget its horrors are apt to become as warped in their judgment as those who seem to have eliminated all consciousness of the fact that there was a war in which millions Of men lost their lives, and who can not see that there will be other wars in the future unless something be done to prevent them when the horrors of the great struggle that has just passed are still fresh in the mind. Not a question concerning the war but is dealt with in these pages, and upon all there is the fullest information. Halsey writes as an American and an ally. He is fair, very fair, in dealing with the enemy; but he is just, as he under stands justice. Yet he is not one Of those historians who write for the purpose Of maintaining national animosities. Excerpt from The Literary Digest, History of the World War, Compiled From Original and Contemporary, Sources, Vol. 3 of 10: American, British, French, German, and Others Germanization. Lille and all northeastern France, between the Oise and the Meuse, were occupied by German troops who had battered down Lille, driven a wedge across the upper Meuse, and had the Woevre in their hands. Their furthermost battle-front was only thirty miles from Paris. They held their western conquests with a line of trenches through which the Allies in vain had sought to break. Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... discipline and order of precedence, as witness the wail of "Major Kemp" I was once----only a few months agocommander of a. company of two hundred and fifty disciplined soldiers. I still nominally command that company, but they have developed into a heterogeneous mob of specialists. If I detail one of my subalterns to do a job of work, he reminds me that he is a bomb-expert, or a professor of sandbagging, or director of the knuckle-duster section, or Lord High Thrower of Stinkpots, and as such has no time to play about with such a common thing as a platoon. As for the men, they simply laugh in the sergeant-major's face. They are "experts," if you please, and are struck ofi all fatigue-s and company duty! It was bad enough when Ayhng pinched fourteen of my best men for his filthy machine guns; now, the company has practically degenerated into an academy of variety artists. The only occasion upon which I ever see them all together is pay-day! To vary the tedium of trench-life, there are various minor disturbances that go unchronicled in the dispatches, but are nevertheless of vital importance to the men involved. There was, for example, "Minnie," a lady of extremely disagreeable temper, given to sudden outbreaks of the most annoying kind. "Minnie" was a _scription of German Minenwerfcr that sorely harassed the "Junior Sub's" company. At unpleasant moments she was given to discharging cylindrical bombs fifteen inches long and some eight inches in diameter containing about thirty pounds of dynamite. The result was, at the least, several yards of parapet smashed, which must be laboriously built up again after dark; and it was a lucky day when two or three Tommies were not the...

Excerpt from The Literary Digest, Vol. 36: January, 1908-June, 1908 The same dispatch reports that the subcommittee of the House Committee on Naval Affairs, which was appointed two years ago, has reached the definite conclusion that something is radically wrong with the naval organization, and will make a determined effort at this session to provide the remedy. Admiral Brownson is quoted as saying frankly: I do not believe in the bureau sys tem, and I think it should be reorganized. Secretary Metcalf, on the other hand, is said to be a strong upholder of the present sys tem. In the main, however, Washington correspondents report a disposition on the part of the Officers most concerned to avoid any public comment on the subject. This is explained on the theory that the whole question will be aired in Congress when the Naval Appropriation Bill comes up for discussion, and that the Officers are saving their ammunition until that time. Admiral Melville, nevertheless, has astonished his brother officers by a peculiarly blunt, tho somewhat vague reference to an infernal clique that wants to rule or ruin the Navy.
