In this perceptive and provocative new look at the Gospels, John Dominic Crossan begins by observing that the parabolic stories told by Jesus seem remarkably similar to the resurrection stories about Jesus. 'Were the latter intended as parables just as much as the former?' he asks. Could it be that we have been reading parables, presuming them to be history, and misunderstanding both? In other words, could Jesus' use of parables have inspired the Gospel writers to create meaningful, metaphorical stories about Jesus to help them explain who he really was?

The world’s foremost Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan shows us how the parables present throughout the New Testament not only reveal what Jesus wanted to teach but also provide the key for explaining how the Gospels’ writers sought to explain the Prophet of Nazareth to the world. In this meaningful exploration of the metaphorical stories told by Jesus and the Gospel writers, Crossan combines the biblical expertise of his The Greatest Prayer with a historical and social analysis that harkens closely to his Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, creating an illuminating and nuanced exploration of the Scripture that fans of Marcus Borg and Bart Ehrman will find fascinating and essential.

The Mockingbird Parables takes readers on an inspiring and engaging journey through Harper Lee’s beloved 1960 literary masterpiece, introducing each character through the lens of faith. The enigmatic Boo Radley as an allegorical representation of God, “the divine, mysterious neighbor” who watches over, protects, and longs to know his children personally. The hero, Atticus Finch, as a model of faith, integrity, and even parenting. The main character, Scout Finch, and what she might teach us about the role of women in church and society. The Mockingbird Parables compels us to ask the often-ignored questions: Do we truly love our neighbors? Are we building community? Are we influencing society for the better? By illuminating the parallels between Christian faith and Lee’s masterpiece, The Mockingbird Parables reaffirms the magnitude of a novel perhaps more relevant today than ever before.

?Do you not understand this parable?? is a question Jesus posed to his disciples (Mark 4:13). Just as the first disciples often did not understand Jesus? many parables, so it is for listeners and readers nearly two thousand years later. In Parables of the Kingdom, Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan helps readers to ?hear? and ?see? and ?understand? the parables of Jesus. She offers a general introduction to the use of parables in the life and ministry of Jesus and the early church. In addition, Getty-Sullivan helps readers learn to interpret parables, to enter into what the parables can reveal about Jesus and his audience, about the evangelists and their communities, and about how we are to understand the Kingdom of God today. Parables of the Kingdom helps us hear and see Jesus? parables with new eyes and renewed hearts?thereby allowing the parables to transform our lives and help us respond with new conviction to the gospel?s power in our world.?In Parables of the Kingdom Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan demonstrates how the parables of Jesus, which use ordinary people, events and things, draw the reader to the deepest heart of the Gospels: the revelation of Jesus Christ (Christology) and what it means to follow him (discipleship). She gives the reader a thorough view of Jesus? ministry and mission in this scholarly and clear to follow, in depth and intriguing presentation. Deliberate attention to the details of each parable heightens not only the reader?s understanding of the Scripture, but excites the imagination as well. One is invited into the world of the parables and thereby, into the world of Jesus. This motivates the reader to come to know Christ anew, once again, and to take up the challenge to follow him by recognizing the possibilities of the Kingdom of God in every day life.? Maureen Crossen, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Theology Department Chair Carlow University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ?This work is clear, informative, and inspirational. Beginners will enjoy its many insights into Jesus? parables. Even old pros in parable interpretation will learn a new lesson or two and have their hearts warmed to know Jesus more fully and follow him more faithfully.? Robert Karris, O.F.M. Despite its importance, the parable of the wicked tenants has been an enigma to modern interpretation. The approaches to the parable have been quite varied. Some interpreters place this parable at the apex of the ministry of Jesus, while others assign little importance to it or virtually ignore it. In some cases the conclusions drawn have been unsatisfactory either because of presuppositions that are too rigid or that have been shown to be erroneous by recent developments. Any discussion of the parable is necessarily a complex one in that it involves the relation of the three Synoptic accounts, an assessment of the account in the Gospel of Thomas, the religious and economic background in Palestine, the self-designation of Jesus, and the theological shaping of the parable by the tradition and by evangelists. Because of the importance of this parable as a possible key to understanding the ministry of Jesus, particularly since its relevance has often been minimized, this parable deserves closer analysis.

The mustard seed. The wineskins. The sheep and the goats. These and dozens more parables enabled Jesus to help his followers--then and now--grasp spiritual truth. R. T. Kendall, who for years preached from Martyn Lloyd-Jones's pulpit at Westminster Chapel in London, unwraps Jesus's simple stories one by one, uncovering profound meaning. Readers will learn how parables safeguard the secrets of God, reveal his sovereignty, and actually survey salvation--from conversion, through the work of the Holy Spirit, to what happens to a believer at death. As readers begin to understand the purpose, promise, and paradox of the parables, they will get to know, in a new and fresh way, the One who told them. Two thousand years ago, as well as today, the parables enliven and enlighten the hearts of all with ears to hear.
