What's bliss? Well, for some of us, it's losing ourselves -- or maybe finding ourselves -- in an appealing book, like Rajeev Balasubramanyam's smart, intentionally comforting fourth novel.Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss sets the tone with its first line: "It should have been the greatest day of his life." Instead, we meet the eponymous 69-year-old Cambridge University economics professor in a state of barely concealed irritation at once again being passed over for the Nobel Prize in Economics. The snub underscores other disappointments in the professor's life, including his wife's abandonment for a grating, more-holistic-than-thou American therapist, and his eldest daughter's refusal to have any contact with him. P.R. Chandrasekhar -- Chandra for short -- is in a funk, which only deepens after the 2016 U.S. election and a health scare. His doctor prescribes a complete change of diet, exercise, and attitude. "You need to cut back on everything," he says. And then the transplanted Californian adds, "You gotta follow your bliss, man."

The Professor's House is Willa Cather's 1925 chronicle of the 52nd year of Godfrey St. Peter, a professor of history at an unnamed Midwestern university in the small town of Hamilton, which borders Lake Michigan. Professor St. Peter has lately finished his magnum opus, a history of the adventures of the Spanish explorers in North America, and he and his wife Lillian are in the process of moving to a new house built with the proceeds of his completed work. Professor St. Peter, however, has grown profoundly attached to his old house. The first and third sections of the novel are composed primarily of his musings about his early career, which was inextricably linked with his happy early married life, his later career, which was inextricably linked with his mentorship of a brilliant student named Tom Outland, and his family, which comprises, aside from his wife, two daughters named Rosamund and Kathleen. The first section of the novel delineates St. Peter's philosophy of life and scholarship, which is also accepted as Cather's; human civilization is at its best when it reveres art, history and religion, which are all parts of the same desirable whole. Civilization is at its worst when it becomes wrapped up in materialistic considerations and reveres only the creature comforts scientific and technological advancements can bring. Exploring these themes and proving this thesis is the main business of the novel. This first section also paints a portrait of St. Peter's family life. His relationships with Lillian, with his daughters, and with his sons-in-law Louie and Scott are becoming strained as he retreats into himself, musing more and more on his dead protégé Outland.

It’s the end of the term, and Nadia Hill hopes for a romance with her young literature professor, once she graduates. But there are obstacles. For starters, she’s attending college under an alias—made necessary because she’s the daughter of a high-ranking figure in organized crime, who vowed that Nadia would receive all A’s throughout her college career. Standing in the way of such perfection is Heath Alexander, a man of unimpeachable integrity, who is about to give Nadia a B+ in his literature course. Will he budge off his principles and award her the higher grade—especially if he is made to understand the dire consequences of not doing so? In this delightful and hilarious novel, matters are complicated further by several of the professor’s colleagues, who plot to deny him tenure; the Don’s loyal yet inept associate; and the Don’s irrepressible and crafty former lover.

The Professor’s Puzzle is designed as a handbook for new and aspiring professors to help them transition from the independent research of their doctoral program to classroom teaching. Unfortunately, acquiring a Ph.D. often does not involve real preparation for teaching. One cannot assume that mastering content necessarily means one is qualified to teach it. Drawing from years of experience training young faculty members, professor Michael S. Lawson gathers together the best of educational research and practices, leavened with the yeast of Christian theology, so that readers are equipped to put the “teaching puzzle” together. Ideal for aspiring professors in Christian higher education, as well as all who enter the teaching profession, so they may learn artful teaching and careful administration.

Create clean code with Dependency Injection principles Key Features Use DI to make your code loosely coupled to manage and test your applications easily on Spring 5 and Google Guice Learn the best practices and methodologies to implement DI Write more maintainable Java code by decoupling your objects from their implementations Book Description Dependency Injection (DI) is a design pattern that allows us to remove the hard-coded dependencies and make our application loosely coupled, extendable, and maintainable. We can implement DI to move the dependency resolution from compile-time to runtime. This book will be your one stop guide to write loosely coupled code using the latest features of Java 9 with frameworks such as Spring 5 and Google Guice. We begin by explaining what DI is and teaching you about IoC containers. Then you’ll learn about object compositions and their role in DI. You’ll find out how to build a modular application and learn how to use DI to focus your efforts on the business logic unique to your application and let the framework handle the infrastructure work to put it all together. Moving on, you’ll gain knowledge of Java 9’s new features and modular framework and how DI works in Java 9. Next, we’ll explore Spring and Guice, the popular frameworks for DI. You’ll see how to define injection keys and configure them at the framework-specific level. After that, you’ll find out about the different types of scopes available in both popular frameworks. You’ll see how to manage dependency of cross-cutting concerns while writing applications through aspect-oriented programming. Towards the end, you’ll learn to integrate any third-party library in your DI-enabled application and explore common pitfalls and recommendations to build a solid application with the help of best practices, patterns, and anti-patterns in DI. What you will learn Understand the benefits of DI and fo from a tightly coupled design to a cleaner design organized around dependencies See Java 9’s new features and modular framework Set up Guice and Spring in an application so that it can be used for DI Write integration tests for DI applications Use scopes to handle complex application scenarios Integrate any third-party library in your DI-enabled application Implement Aspect-Oriented Programming to handle common cross-cutting concerns such as logging, authentication, and transactions Understand IoC patterns and anti-patterns in DI Who this book is for This book is for Java developers who would like to implement DI in their application. Prior knowledge of the Spring and Guice frameworks and Java programming is assumed.

Reconceptualizing Libraries brings together cases and models developed by experts in the information and learning sciences to identify the potential for libraries to adapt and transform in the wake of new technologies for connected learning and discovery. Chapter authors explore the ways that the increased interest in the design research methods, digital media emphases, and technological infrastructure of the learning sciences can foster new collaborations and formats for education within physical library spaces. Models and case studies from a variety of library contexts demonstrate how library professionals can act as change agents and design partners and how patrons can engage with these evolving experiences. This is a timely and innovative volume for understanding how physical libraries can incorporate and thrive as educational resources using new developments in technology and in the learning sciences.
