It is one of the ironies of our times that, as the practise of religion wanes, a theoretical interest in it on the part of many anthropologists, psychologists, sociologists and philosophers waxes. Among these, only philosophers bring to their task a long history of theological and reli gious relations. Hence their renewed interest has been hailed as a break down of isolationism, heralding, perhaps, a new era of interdisciplinary peace. To celebrate this new ecumenism, a Chicago seminary, consis tently with its purpose, sponsored a colloquium to explore the future of philosophical theology. If some of its participating professional philosophers initially felt a twinge of embarrassment over their presence at an ostensibly theological meeting, they soon were at ease. No one was called upon to define the topic, or even to suggest its relationship to a philosophy of religion. Conveniently, everyone could role up his sleeves and get to work on a job he personally felt needed doing. Can we wonder that the lay observer appeared somewhat confused? Was the purpose to analyze "God talk," or to find a place for 'God' in a metaphysical scheme? Or if not these, something else? It soon became evident that the participants in the colloquium ranged from the free swinger to the severely inhibited, depending upon the role each assigned to dogma and creed.

Religion is not a theory about reality; it is a reality. And yet we must not forget that it is a reality, which includes a theory. ~ ~ ~ In The Religious Experience philosopher James Bissett Pratt attempts to describe religious consciousness as an unprejudiced observer who has no thesis to prove. He demonstrates the universality of religious experience, however varied the verbal descriptions employed by persons who have had it. Topics covered in the book include the Religion of Childhood, the Belief in Immortality, the Cult and its Causes, and the Place and Value of Mysticism. JAMES BISSETT PRATT (1875 -1944) was strongly influenced by his deeply religious mother who awakened him to the phenomenon of religion and one's personal relationship with God. Pratt obtained his doctorate from Harvard University under the aegis of William James, who influenced his philosophical development, and became a mentor and good friend. Shortly afterwards he was hired by William College, where he became a professor of philosophy. Although raised an American Protestant, he did his best to experience Roman Catholicism in Europe, and Hinduism and Buddhism in India, Burma, and Sri Lanka.

Crucial themes and issues explored by a premier missiologist Johan Herman Bavinck (1895-1964) was a prominent twentieth-century Dutch Calvinist missiologist who wrestled with the tension between religious absolutism and relativism, as many Christians do in today's pluralistic context. The J. H. Bavinck Reader gathers together a choice selection of Bavinck's significant writings that are essential for understanding his theology of missions, his approach to world religions, and his religious psychology. His treatment of religious consciousness and Christian faith expands on the brief treatment of it in his own work The Church Between Temple and Mosque. The concluding chapters show how Bavinck's theoretical reflection on religious consciousness was rooted in his close observation during his years as a missionary in Indonesia. Offering a constructive way forward, Bavinck affirms both the particularity of salvation in Christ and the universality of the Christian hope. A substantial introduction enhances the book with the most thorough biographical sketch of Bavinck available.

Ionian and Cartesian Consciousness, a work in philosophical anthropology, is the second part of a history of religion from prehistory to the dawn of the Medieval period with specific regard to the origin and development of Christianity. It commences with a description of the revolution in cognition that took place in Greek Ionia c. 600 BCE, when Western ideation became bounded by a false dichotomy between appearance and reality that lead to an Either/Or. The central concerns are with the metaphysical and ethical issue of immortality, and with the spiritual illness of the West. The bounded cognition of modernity that was established in the Greek and Roman period is subjected to scrutiny from the vantage of a higher stage of consciousness, designated Kantian, subjective consciousness. The philosophy and theology of Plato is a central concern of the work. It examines afresh such issues as the conception of sin as desire of the Flesh, the doctrine of the Fall of Man, the typography of Hell, Orphism, human identity, proofs of the immortality of the soul from within Ionian consciousness and the transcendental deduction. There is a penetrating and fresh analysis of the human experience of remorse and despair that builds on the phenomenology of Kierkegaard. On the basis of the study of the history of ideas and associated religious consciousness, Ionian and Cartesian Consciousness advances radical new insights into Greek and Roman history: the relationship in the exchange of ideas between Greece, Persia and India, the religious history of classical Athens, the roots of Roman religion in Etruscan culture, and the reformation of Roman religion in Roman pre-history. Building on the history of archetypes began in the first volume, it traces the emergence of the Christ archetype though the mediation of the Prometheus and Hercules archetypes, the decay of Pagan belief, and the rise of Stoicism. Ionian and Cartesian Consciousness is the second of a three-part series: Immortality, The Groundwork to the History of Western Consciousness. The first and third parts of the series are entitled Primitive Materialism, and Kantian Consciousness.

Excerpt from God in History, or the Progress of Man's Faith in the Moral Order of the World, Vol. 3 of 3 Thus the contemplation of this unique religious con sciousness forms the sacred vestibule to the grand course of development which, receiving its primary impulse from Christ, has now been gradually unfolding itself before our eyes for nearly 2000 years. We must separate between the Apostles and Evangelists, and the Person of the Christ Whom they have proclaimed to the world, and the his torical acquaintance with Whom has been preserved to us by their writings. They are rather to be considered as forming the Semitic rudiment Of the Church's develop ment, but a rudiment pregnant with the germs of the whole life of Humanity. In the history of man's religious consciousness, Christ is not the latest of the Jewish prophets, but the Father of the Christian prophets and nations - the Son of Man and the Son of God. The Apostles are His witnesses, the earliest of all Semitic Christians, and the primary founders of the Christian Churches. It is undisputed that from this date onwards, that development of the religious consciousness which has taken place among the Christian Aryans, has been the depositary of the dominant religious consciousness of mankind at large. But this development is unintelligible apart from that unique Personality. It is only by a con tinual comparison of the perfect Personality of Jesus, and of the lofty goal which He has set before us, with the de velopment, national and individual, which has attached itself to Him, that we obtain a standard by which to measure the import of past Christian ages, a key to the understanding of ourselves and our own age, and a clue to guide our guesses at the future; but this knowledge does confer peace of heart, peace of conscience.
