'Someone jolted my elbow as I drank and said, "Je vous demande pardon," and as I moved to give him space he turned and stared at me and I at him, and I realised, with a strange sense of shock and fear and nausea all combined, that his face and voice were known to me too well. I was looking at myself.' By chance, two men - one English, the other French - meet in a provincial railway station. Their resemblance is uncanny, and they spend the next few hours talking and drinking - until at last John, the Englishman, falls into a drunken stupor. It's to be his last carefree moment, for when he wakes, his French companion has stolen his identity and disappeared. So John steps into the Frenchman's shoes, and faces a variety of perplexing roles - as owner of a chateau, director of a failing business, head of a fractious family, and master of nothing.

As I write these words I would say forgiveness is the most powerful spiritual tool one can take with them on their life journey. While in Maryland ministering at my very first out of state meeting is where God through the Holy Spirit taught me about forgiveness. When one refuses to forgive and allows un-forgiveness to reign in their heart it will literally paralyze them from moving into the true blessings God has for them. Life becomes more tainted one might say. In Matthew 9:2 we see Jesus healing a man from palsy (paralyze) the first thing he says to him was take up thy bed and walk thy sins have been forgiven. Jesus knew the cause of his crippling state, and forgiveness was the answer. When speaking to the people there he said, "what's easier to forgive him or say take up thy bed and walk?" He was stagnated and could not move because of unforgiveness and lay there without hope. Whatever the sin was it was not the problem it did its job. That was to stop him from moving forward in life. His life had altered its course he had become stuck. The life force of his spirit had stop until Jesus the life giver came. I can remember the day that Jesus came into my life giving me mercy here I stood a sinner and now my sins have been forgiven or pardon. There is a song that said, "When I could not reach mercy, mercy came running to me" Jesus has come to us. Glory! So just as you have been forgiven you too must forgive all those in your past that has hurt, disappointed you causing you to become stagnated in your life. Jesus the giver of life is here!

An engrossing and richly panoramic novel from a major new writer, based on a true story... In 1948, the body of an American journalist is found floating in the bay off Thessaloniki. A small-time Greek journalist is tried and convicted for the murder...but when he's released twelve years later, he claims his confession was the result of torture. Flash forward to contemporary Greece, where a rebellious young high school student is given an assignment for a school project: find the truth. And as he begrudgingly takes it on, he begins to make a startling series of gripping discoveries--about history, love, and even his own family's involvement. Based on the real story of famed CBS reporter George Polk—journalism’s prestigious Polk Awards were named after him—The Scapegoat is a sweeping saga that brings together the Greece of the post-World War II era with the Greece of today, a country facing dangerous times once again. As told by key players in the story—the dashing journalist’s Greek widow; the mother and sisters of the convicted man; the brutal Thessaloniki Chief of Police; a U.S. Foreign Office investigator, and, finally, the modern-day student, in the novel's most stirring narration of all--The Scapegoat confronts questions of truth, justice, and sacrifice...and how the past is always with us.

Michael Rasmussen was close to winning the Tour de France 2007 when his team Rabobank decided to take him out of the race. This was a consequence of a press campaign without precedence in the history of sport. When it was leaked to the press that Michael Rasmussen had received warnings from the anti-doping authorities for whereabouts rule violations the media ran with the story as if Rasmussen had been caught doping. The Scapegoat, written by Professor of Sports Studies Verner Møller, demonstrates that Michael Rasmussen was not expelled from the Tour on sporting grounds. The book is an uncompromising uncovering of a sports system and an anti-doping campaign driven by an ungraceful mix of fair play promotion and business interests.

An ancient legend, an all-too modern murder, and Chief Superintendent Wycliffe must find the link between them ... Every year, at Halloween, high on the Cornish cliffs, a life-sized effigy of a man is strapped to a blazing wheel and run into the sea - a re-enactment of a hideous old legend where the figure had been a living sacrifice. And now Jonathan Riddle, well-known and respected local builder and undertaker, has disappeared - and it seems all too likely that his corpse has gone the way of the historic 'scapegoat'. As Chief Superintendent Wycliffe begins to investigate, more and more unpleasant facts emerge until he is left with an incredible, and seemingly impossible, solution . . . Why readers love W.J. Revolving around the opera, these tales are an “archaeological excavation of the slag-heaps of our collective existence” (W. G. Sebald) Combining fact and fiction, each of the one hundred and two tales of Alexander Kluge’s Temple of the Scapegoat (dotted with photos of famous operas and their stars) compresses a lifetime of feeling and thought: Kluge is deeply engaged with the opera and an inventive wellspring of narrative notions. The titles of his stories suggest his many turns of mind: “Total Commitment,” “Freedom,” “Reality Outrivals Theater,” “The Correct Slowing-Down at the Transitional Point Between Terror and an Inkling of Freedom,” “A Crucial Character (Among Persons None of Whom Are Who They Think They Are),” and “Deadly Vocal Power vs. Generosity in Opera.” An opera, Kluge says, is a blast furnace of the soul, telling of the great singer Leonard Warren who died onstage, having literally sung his heart out. Kluge introduces a Tibetan scholar who realizes that opera “is about comprehension and passion. The two never go together. Passion overwhelms comprehension. Comprehension kills passion. This appears to be the essence of all operas, says Huang Tse-we.” He also comes to understand that female roles face the harshest fates: “Compared to the mass of soprano victims (out of 86,000 operas, 64,000 end with the death of the soprano), the sacrifice of tenors is small (out of 86,000 operas 1,143 tenors are a write-off).”

"[Girard's] methods of extrapolating to find cultural history behind myths, and of reading hidden verification through silence, are worthy enrichments of the critic's arsenal." -- John Yoder, Religion and Literature.
