This volume is the 10th issue of Variants. In keeping with the mission of the European Society for Textual Scholarship, the articles are richly interdisciplinary and transnational. They bring to bear a wide range of topics and disciplines on the field of textual scholarship: historical linguistics, digital scholarly editing, classical philology, Dutch, English, Finnish and Swedish Literature, publishing traditions in Japan, book history, cultural history and folklore. The questions that are explored — what texts are worth editing? what is the nature of the relationship between text, work, document and book? what is a critical digital edition? — all return to fundamental issues that have been at the heart of the editorial discipline for decades. With refreshing insight they assess the increasingly hybrid nature of the theoretical considerations and practical methodologies employed by textual scholars, while reasserting the relevance and need for producing scholarly editions, whether in print or digital, and continuing advanced research in bibliographical codes, textual transmissions, genetic dossiers, the fluidity of texts and other such Subjects that connect textual scholarship with broader investigations into our nations’ literary culture and written heritage.

This collection of essays continues Barrett's investigations into implementingnetworked online systems described in his first book Text, ConText, and HyperText, with a morefocused emphasis on specific hypermedia systems. In four parts the 22 essays take up designinghypertext and hypermedia systems for the online user; textual intervention and collaboration; newroles for writers; and sensemaking and learning in the online environment. In his introduction,Barrett analyzes the design of networked online systems as part of a collaborative process, asserting that the online environment fosters collaboration by using computer technology to supportinteraction among those who design, use, and write software. The first five essays present agenealogy of hypertext development, assess various hypertext designs, discuss users' wants andneeds, and analyze the "rhetoric" of hypertext applications in light of new models for computerhuman interaction. Seven essays then take up new, important online systems for informationretrieval, document production, and training in the online environment. Included are a first timefull scale analysis of the Athena Muse hypermedia system developed at MIT, the hypertext environmentIntermedia, developed at Brown, the University of Maryland's Hyperties, and the Educational OnlineSystem for document production and training technical writers, now in its second year of use atMIT.New roles for writers and productivity gains provided by online environments are the subject ofthe next six essays. The final four essays discuss instructional efficiency and the failures ofinstructional materials. Novel proposals are described for addressing the needs and strategies oflearners, for supporting cooperative work in creating, revising, and testing a software program, forevaluating online help systems, and for eliminating ambiguity in online text.Edward Barrett isLecturer in the Writing Program at MIT. The Society of Text is included in the Information Systemsseries, edited by Michael Lesk.

The central place of ?text? as a means of organising language in order to construct what people come to think of as ?knowledge? is a phenomenon affecting all educators, students, and citizens of modern societies. This volume offers various voices and perspectives including those of Ron Carter and Michael Halliday on the role of text in education and society. The chapters on text in education explore some ways in which texts can create bonds or raise barriers between educational knowledge and common-sense knowledge, while the chapters on text in society focus on how personalities and societies are themselves constructed through texts. Learning to unpack texts, and to consider alternatives, is a crucial goal for education and growth, especially so in the context of fast-changing contemporary societies. This book should be of special interest to educators, students of language, and readers interested in the dynamic relationship between text, education and society.

Society, Representations and Textuality: The Critical Interface brings together papers from various critical perspectives of Humanities and Social Sciences. The work (a) takes stock of the recent developments in critical theory and cultural studies; (b) studies the impact of these developments on the understanding of social reality and the human predicament in India; and (c) brings together scholars from North East India who are engaged in the project of understanding society and communities in their chosen intellectual practice. The book is the first-ever attempt to establish a dialogic encounter between critical practices in Humanities and Social sciences, hitherto considered to be autonomous in their own disciplinary boundaries. Further, the volume addresses issues of identity and autonomy of a multicultural India, particularly with reference to the interface between hegemonic cultures and politically and culturally persistent smaller communities. A significant feature of this book is its attempt to theorize and describe the myriad manifestations of the critical interface between society and literary or cultural productions.

It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license and is part of the OAPEN-UK research project. This book is an examination of the effect of contemporary wars (such as the 'War on Terror') on civil life at a global level. Contemporary literature on war is mainly devoted to recent changes in the theory and practice of warfare, particular those in which terrorists or insurgents are involved (for example, the 'revolution in military affairs', 'small wars', and so on). On the other hand, today's research on security is focused, among other themes, on the effects of the war on terrorism, and on civil liberties and social control. This volume connects these two fields of research, showing how 'war' and 'security' tend to exchange targets and forms of action as well as personnel (for instance, the spreading use of private contractors in wars and of military experts in the 'struggle for security') in modern society. This shows how, contrary to Clausewitz's belief war should be conceived of as a "continuation of politics by other means", the opposite statement is also true: that politics, insofar as it concerns security, can be defined as the 'continuation of war by other means'. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, war and conflict studies, terrorism studies, sociology and IR in general. Salvatore Palidda is Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Genoa. Alessandro Dal Lago is Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication at the University of Genoa.

"Not only do we need to know what agriculture is, but the relative importance of its parts". The Principles of Agriculture is an extensively comprehensive handbook covering absolutely everything necessary for success in agriculture, written by one of the most knowledgeable practitioners of his time: Liberty Hyde Bailey. This text starts by outlining the intrinsic roles of science and business in agriculture, going on in a logical order to set forth the skeleton of the subject to be used by a teacher in agricultural education. A seminal piece on agriculture, this scarce text will appeal to those interested in the evolution of modern agriculture and constitutes a must-have for collectors of Bailey’s work. American-born Liberty Hyde Bailey was a prolific horticulturist and botanist who wrote extensively on both topics. Originally published in 1897, we now proudly republish this scarce classic with an additional biography of the author.
