“The Undertaker’s Daughter is a wonderfully quirky, gem of a book beautifully written by Kate Mayfield.…Her compelling, complicated family and cast of characters stay with you long after you close the book” (Monica Holloway, author of Cowboy & Wills and Driving With Dead People). How does one live in a house of the dead? Kate Mayfield explores what it meant to be the daughter of a small-town undertaker in this fascinating memoir evocative of Six Feet Under and The Help, with a hint of Mary Roach’s Stiff. After Kate Mayfield was born, she was taken directly to a funeral home. Her father was an undertaker, and for thirteen years the family resided in a place nearly synonymous with death, where the living and the dead entered their house like a vapor. In a memoir that reads like a Harper Lee novel, Mayfield draws the reader into a world of haunting Southern mystique. In the turbulent 1960s, Kate’s father set up shop in sleepy Jubilee, Kentucky, a segregated, god-fearing community where no one kept secrets—except the ones they were buried with. By opening a funeral home, Frank Mayfield also opened the door to family feuds, fetishes, murder, suicide, and all manner of accidents. Kate saw it all—she also witnessed the quiet ruin of her father, who hid alcoholism and infidelity behind a cool and charismatic façade. As Kate grows from trusting child to rebellious teen, the enforced sobriety of the funeral home begins to chafe, and she longs for the day she can escape the confines of Jubilee and her place as the undertaker’s daughter. “Mayfield fashions a poignant send-off to Jubilee in this thoughtfully rendered work” (Publishers Weekly).

The daughter of a powerful industrialist seeks to live on her own terms in this entertaining portrait of the American home front during World War II Polly Fulton, the daughter of one of America’s most successful and admired businessmen, lives with her parents and brother in a thirty-room apartment on New York City’s Park Avenue. Yet she despises the superficial trappings of wealth and delights in defying convention. In the months before America enters World War II, she shocks her family and friends by dumping her longtime boyfriend, Bob Tasmin, and marrying radical journalist Tom Brett. As the war rages on the other side of the globe and dominates the thoughts of everyone at home, Polly comes to realize that she acted out of pride and contrariness, not love. But with Bob stationed in Guam, it may be too late to correct her terrible mistake. A richly detailed, elegantly crafted tale about the search for happiness in the chaos of wartime, B.F.’s Daughter is one of John P. Marquand’s warmest and most empathetic novels.

Bram Stoker's classic novel of suspense and horror was a bestseller in Britain when it was published in 1897. A late 20th-century biographer of Stoker has suggested that famed Victorian actor Henry Irving, for whom Stoker worked for many years, was an inspiration for some of Count Dracula's characteristics.

Although there is extensive research on the loss of a spouse, predominantly focusing on the experiences of widows, much less attention is paid to bereaved partners not married to their significant other, whether or not the partners are of the same sex. This first-of-its-kind work explores both socially sanctioned and disenfranchised grief, highlighting similarities and differences. Combining a discussion of various theories of grief with personal narratives of grieving men and women drawn from numerous interviews, and detailed case study analysis, Carolyn Ambler Walter has produced a penetrating examination of the bereavement experiences of partners in varying types of relationships. She views narratives of widows, widowers, and bereaved domestic gay and lesbian partners from a postmodern perspective that breaks away from the traditional belief that the living must detach themselves from the dead in order to move on with their lives. Instead, building on the works of postmodern grief theorists such as Klass, Silverman, and Nickman, Walter views ongoing bonds with the dead as a resource for enriching functionality in the present, and as a key to looking to the future.

WILLIAM BRIGHT was bright by name, but many thought he wasn’t too bright by nature until William proved them all to be wrong. He was a little slower than most of the other pupils at his school because it was later learned that he was dyslexic and he had a bad stutter. He wasn’t very popular with the girls either, although he was considered to be rather handsome …He was also tall and he was dark, so what was missing you might ask. . . and probably the answer was that William was very shy and found it very difficult to converse and mix with young people of his own age. William adored his father, but the father died at an early age when William was only six and he wore his father’s wedding ring around his neck until he was old enough to wear it on the fourth finger of the left hand, swearing he would never remove the ring until he found someone that he could love as he had loved his dad. William’s mother wasn’t interested in the boy and considered him to be too stupid to do anything more than the job he got when he left school at the age of fifteen. She had interests of her own which would not be normally classed as motherly and she states that William started to stutter when his father died and believes it was a great shock to him which brought this about.
