In this groundbreaking volume, Krzysztof Ziarek rethinks modern experience by bringing together philosophical critiques of modernity and avant-garde poetry. Ziarek explores, through selective readings of avant-garde poetry, the key aspects of the radical critique of experience: technology, everydayness, event, and sexual difference. To that extent, The Historicity of Experience is less a book about the avant-garde than a critique of experience through the avant-garde. Ziarek reads the avant-garde in dialogue with the work of some of the major critics of modernity (Martin Heidegger, Walter Benjamin, Jean-François Lyotard, and Luce Irigaray) to show how avant-garde experiments bear critically on the issue of modern experience and its technological organization. The four poets Ziarek considers-Gertrude Stein, Velimir Khlebnikov, Miron Biaoszewski, and Susan Howe-demonstrate the broad reach of and variety of forms taken by the avant-garde revision of experience and aesthetics. Moreover, this quartet illustrates how the main operative concepts and strategies of the avant-garde underpinned the practices of canonical writers. A profound philosophical meditation on language, modernity, and the everyday, The Historicity of Experience offers a fundamental reconceptualization of the avant-garde in relation to experience.

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of his hand. -Isaiah 64:8 All Christians have a God-given destiny, but many are at a loss when it comes to identifying it. Knowing our spiritual gifts and how the Holy Spirit has equipped us is the first step in determining what we are called to do to serve in the Body of Christ. This book is a grassroots approach in an easily understood format to help readers discover their spiritual gifts and thus begin to move toward the unique destiny that God has outlined for each person's life. The author uses personal memoirs, teachings, assessments, and true stories of supernatural encounters to demonstrate how all believers can personally access the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill all that has been blueprinted for them. We are the work of His hands!

These studies address the role of the horse's dorsal cervical musculoskeletal structures during locomotion. Chapter One introduces locomotion energetics and gait mechanisms and outlines strategies for investigating the neck structures and functions. Chapter Two examines the functional morphology and material properties of the equine nuchal ligament (NL), a complex elastic structure traditionally thought to provide postural support for the head and neck. The caudal funicular and cranial lamellar regions of the NL are found to make the largest contributions to elastic strain energy storage and recovery during locomotory head movements. The NL's modulus of elasticity was found to be 8.4 x 105 Nm-2. Chapter Three examines NL function in vivo. The head and neck movements of Standardbred horses exercising on a high-speed treadmill are measured, and the mechanical work performed by the head and neck segments at walk, trot and canter is calculated. The position of the head and neck relative to the trunk is used to indirectly measure the elastic strain energy stored in the NL during the head movements of locomotion. Combining these data allows an estimation of the proportion of head/neck work contributed by passive components of the equine neck: 55% at the walk, and 33% and 31% respectively at the trot and canter. By substituting passive NL work for active muscular work, the horse can reduce its metabolic cost of locomotion. Chapter Four investigates the active components of head/neck movement, analyzing the two major dorsal cervical muscles (semispinalis capitis and splenius) for gross morphology, micro-architecture, fiber length and fiber type. The histochemical staining profile was limited to two fiber types: slow oxidative (SO) and fast glycolytic (FG). The splenius muscle has simple architecture, long fibers and a 60/40 ratio of SO to FG cross-sectional area. The semispinalis capitis has complex architecture with short fibered, concentric compartments dorsal to its central tendon and longer fibered compartments ventrally. The two regions have opposite caudal to cranial gradients of fiber proportions: increasing SO dorsally (58--71%) and increasing FG ventrally (48--67%). In Chapter Five, conclusions from the equine neck studies and their implications for normal and abnormal locomotion are discussed.
