BE GONE!” Mus throttled the engine but the boat was stalled. The mermaids rocked the boat fervently, capsizing the boat. Noooo!!!!! Like an anchor, Mus was sinking. He was dragged down by Sang Suri to the bottom of the ocean. As he gradually lost his consciousness, his last thoughts were thinking about how weird it was that he’s still alive and how strange it was to be breathing underwater. Suddenly Mus woke up and saw Sang Suri by his side. He was at loss for words when he saw that he was surrounded by houses, hills and mermaids. “Strange!” he thought. “Strange but beautiful”. We no longer ascribe the term ’mermaid’ to those we deem sexually or economically threatening; we do not ubiquitously use the mermaid’s image in political propaganda or feature her within our houses of worship; perhaps most notably, we do not entertain the possibility of the mermaid’s existence. This, author Tara Pedersen argues, makes it difficult for contemporary scholars to consider the mermaid as a figure who wields much social significance. During the early modern period, however, this was not the case, and Pedersen illustrates the complicated category distinctions that the mermaid inhabits and challenges in 16th-and 17th-century England. Addressing epistemological questions about embodiment and perception, this study furthers research about early modern theatrical culture by focusing on under-theorized and seldom acknowledged representations of mermaids in English locations and texts. While individuals in early modern England were under pressure to conform to seemingly monolithic ideals about the natural order, there were also significant challenges to this order. Pedersen uses the figure of the mermaid to rethink some of these challenges, for the mermaid often appears in surprising places; she is situated at the nexus of historically specific debates about gender, sexuality, religion, the marketplace, the new science, and the culture of curiosity and travel. Although these topics of inquiry are not new, Pedersen argues that the mermaid provides a new lens through which to look at these subjects and also helps scholars think about the present moment, methodologies of reading, and many category distinctions that are important to contemporary scholarly debates.

Princess Seira of Amphilora is one of the rarest mermaids in the underwater world of Mer, and as such, she is restricted to the palace and palace waters for her safety. While all the other merfolk have the same color of eyes as their tail scales, Seira's eyes are azure with tail scales that are typically yellow with a golden tint. What makes her even rarer and more unique is the fact that her tail scales change color with her mood. With her second to last chance at staying in Amphilora being a marriage to Barracudon, the oldest prince of a kingdom on the other side of the ocean and her exact opposite, Seira's not happy. She likes to break the rules; he's a stickler for following them. She loves to make herself happy before doing what is required from her position; he prefers to do what his position demands and forget about his happiness. Can the two of them find some kind of even ground that allows Seira to stay in Amphilora, or will she get tired of being treated like her father's precious artifact and swim to shore?

Peter Pan was born over a century ago. There is something doubly contradictory in this phrase that, although true, is also the reason why this book has been released. We are talking about the boy who will never grow up and the fact that he is celebrating his hundredth birthday should provoke some surprise. At the same time, he is such a powerful icon that it is also true that he seems to have been there, floating in our culture, reappearing in its images, since time immemorial – much farther back than the early twentieth century. This book shows that, although he considered dying to be an awfully big adventure, Peter Pan is, on his one hundredth birthday, more alive than ever. And our prediction is that he will accompany our culture as long as it survives. Like all great myths, Peter will continue bursting through the window of our texts, leading us to other worlds so that when we least expect it, we will hear his cry emanate from a dark ocean. This book, in a sincere tribute, intends to be both a compilation and a precedent – by inspiring a deeper look into its image, we hope to influence the life of this character so dear and yet so mysterious and seductive.

While competitive natural selection is widely assumed to be evolution's prime mover, Weiss shows how life generally works on the basis of cooperation. He reveals that focus on competition and cooperation is largely an artifact of compression of time--a distortion that dissolves when life is viewed from developmental and evolutionary time scales.

Over the course of twenty years of delivering sailboats to far-flung quaysides, John Kretschmer has had innumerable adventures, both humorous and terrifying. in Flirting with Mermaids, he recounts the most memorable of them. He crosses the Western Caribbean with a crew of eccentric Swedes researching ancient Mayan mariners, lands in Aden at the outbreak of civil war, and endures a North Atlantic crossing during which he disocvers the existence of Force 13 winds. Approaching Japan at the end of a particularly trying delivery, he finds himself sailing in "a high impact debris zone," but his resolve is unshaken. "If a piece of rocketship jetsam fell out of the sky and sank [me] after encounters with Hurricane Floyd, General Noriega,a tsunami, an erupting volcano, and Typhoon Roy, then it was meant to be."
