Born on Saturday August 7, 1982 on the beautiful island of New Providence, she was blessed Bennique Inderria Brown, the second of three children. Her early education began at Lady Bird Preschool, and then she attended St. Cecilias Catholic Primary, St. Annes in Eleuthera for one term, Aquinas College, H. O. Nash, and then graduated at the C.R. Walker Senior High School. Her tertiary education led her to The College of the Bahamas where she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education, specializing in English Language and Literature. Presently she is in pursuit of a Masters Degree at The College of The Bahamas in Reading with concentration in Inclusive Education. Though she has attended various learning institutions, she was sure to leave her footprints in the sand. She was involved in track and basketball teams, dance ministry, choir, Bahamas Jr. Red Cross, Technical Cadets, Rotaract Club, and The Education Awareness Society. She was taught from a very early age about religion. Moreover, her years of dedication to the Pentecostal Ministry provided her the opportunity to serve on the usher board, sing on the praise team and combined choir. She has learned that in all things you must put God first and in return he will give you the desires of your heart. One such desire of hers is to become an international public speaker addressing the youths of this nation to follow their dreams. She is definitely well on her way to accomplishing this dream as she is a part of an International Organization that has enhanced her public speaking and communication skills. She joined the Toastmasters organization in 2005, and during that time has held the positions of Secretary, Vice President of Membership, Vice President of Education and President.

Born during the Great Depression in rura Alabama, his family moved to the Southwest when he was six months old. He describes his life journey over the next 70 years, which was strongly influenced by the great societal and technological changes of that period. Most of his life choices were driven by a need to suceed. His strong independence and leadership qualities were identified early. From high-school dropout and military service to Ph.D. in physics validated his drive. Being a young paratroper, living in Africa in the 1960's, and long motorcycle trips added a bit of excitement. Long hours working and leading high-technology programs in California afforded many opportunities for scientific and technical contributions and led to extensive travel, much of it foreign, which he describes in some detail. Here is a man who is tough, fair, out-spoken, and a whole lot of fun. I saw him as a handsome, charming man, who found love and family. Children and grandchildren enriched his life. He had many trials and tribulations, and he faced them all squarely. You might say, like Zorba, he experienced the full catasrophe. Roberta Claire, a friend

Trying to gain employment, in a society that prides itself on social equality, forces a Black Jamaican-Canadian woman to live through the racist hiring practices of Canadian governmental institutions, i.e., the Canadian Armed Forces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The failure of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, to uphold her Canadian Constitutional Rights, left her with the belief that the dominant group (Caucasian) is free to practice racism with impunity. In absolute despair, she embraces thoughts of death as a relief from her life. Paradoxically, the source of her desire to die is also the source of her desire to live.

I gave considerable thought as to what the title of my autobiography should be. There was never any question that a portion of the title would read, "The Life Experiences of a World War II, Korea, and Vietnam ______? American Army Veteran", but how would I be described in view of the many "race" descriptions the U.S. Census has used for the black citizens since the first census in 1790? Should I be described as a Colored, Black, Mulatto, Quadroon, Octoroon, African American, or Negro American Army Veterans? I chose BLACK as being the most descriptive term and, as James Brown said, I'm black and I'm proud! My life experiences include a few race-related incidents that occurred before, during and after my military service. Each incident could have greatly influenced my overall attitude towards life, in general, and in an adverse manner, but fortunately did not. Q. Jarone Batson
