Lara has always had an overactive imagination. Now she wonders if she is losing her mind. Normal twenty-something girls just don't get visited by ghosts! But inexplicably, the spirit of Lara's great aunt Sadie - in the form of a bold, demanding Charleston-dancing girl - has appeared to make one last request: Lara must track down a missing necklace Sadie simply can't rest without. Lara's got enough problems of her own. Her start-up company is floundering, her best friend and business partner has run off to Goa, and she's just been dumped by the love of her life. But as Lara spends time with Sadie, life becomes more glamorous and their treasure hunt turns into something intriguing and romantic. Could Sadie's ghost be the answer to Lara's problems and can two girls from different times end up learning something special from each other? It was a decade of flappers, Prohibition, and unprecedented prosperity that abruptly ended with the crash of '29. In New Orleans, steamships lined the wharves, vaudeville gave way to "talkies," and William Faulkner's Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles was the first book produced by a new publisher called Pelican Publishing Company. Mary Lou Widmer's fourth retrospect of the city reminisces about how New Orleans welcomed the economic growth of the postwar twenties in its own special way. The Crescent City celebrated this prosperity, giving birth to jazz halls in the Vieux Carr' and launching the careers of musicians like Louis Armstrong. It was the most progressive era in the city's history since before the Civil War. From politics to homelife there is hardly an aspect of life in the twenties Widmer does not touch upon. A full chapter is devoted to how the city known for Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras reacted to Prohibition. Indoor plumbing and electric lights became the standard in homes throughout the city. Transportation opened up new neighborhoods as cars became status symbols and the streetcar system took riders to every neighborhood in the city. Mary Lou Widmer, a native of New Orleans, is former president of the South Louisiana Chapter of Romance Writers of America. She has written several novels set in New Orleans. A certified descendant of settlers in the area prior to the Louisiana Purchase, she is a member of the Louisiana Colonials and the Daughters of 1812. She is also the author of New Orleans in the Thirties, New Orleans in the Forties, and New Orleans in the Fifties, all published by Pelican.

Gender equity was high on South Africa's social agenda in 1994. Education was seen as a key vehicle for transforming unequal relationships in the broader society. Ten years after South Africa's democratic elections, how far has South Africa come in realising these goals? And how does our own experience relate to that of other countries and contexts? This volume collects the reflections of policy-makers, researchers, teacher unionists and journalists on successes and challenges in the struggle to mainstream gender and effect gender equality. Their reflections are framed in the context of experiences from India, Australia and Africa. This is an important and timely book, which shows that the road to gender equity in South African education is still a long one. This book contains papers from a conference held on 18-20 May 2004 which brought together leading South African and international experts working on gender equity in education and drawn from the fields of government, research and civil society. The conference was hosted by the British Council and the Child, Youth and Family Development Research Programme of the Human Sciences Research Council.

Many people run scared from the middle school youth room. But (thankfully!) there are people out there who are actually drawn to those young teens. Although often times they’re not equipped to deal with the unique challenges that middle school ministry presents, or they’re just not sure what to do when a room full of young teens (who are “part child, but not quite adult”) are running around the youth room. Finally, there’s a comprehensive guide to middle school ministry, from two veterans of this unchartered territory. Mark Oestreicher and Scott Rubin help youth workers understand the importance of middle school ministry, the development process for young teens and their implications for ministry, and how to best minister to these sometimes misunderstood students. They share their experiences (as middle school pastors and parents of middle schoolers), giving youth workers he encouragement, hope, and training they need to succeed in middle school ministry.

In the early nineties, riot grrrl exploded onto the underground music scene, inspiring girls to pick up an instrument, create fanzines, and become politically active. Rejecting both traditional gender roles and their parents' brand of feminism, riot grrrls celebrated and deconstructed femininity. The media went into a titillated frenzy covering followers who wrote "slut" on their bodies, wore frilly dresses with combat boots, and talked openly about sexual politics. The movement's message of "revolution girl-style now" soon filtered into the mainstream as "girl power," popularized by the Spice Girls and transformed into merchandising gold as shrunken T-shirts, lip glosses, and posable dolls. Though many criticized girl power as at best frivolous and at worst soulless and hypersexualized, Marisa Meltzer argues that it paved the way for today's generation of confident girls who are playing instruments and joining bands in record numbers. Girl Power examines the role of women in rock since the riot grrrl revolution, weaving Meltzer's personal anecdotes with interviews with key players such as Tobi Vail from Bikini Kill and Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. Chronicling the legacy of artists such as Bratmobile, Sleater-Kinney, Alanis Morissette, Britney Spears, and, yes, the Spice Girls, Girl Power points the way for the future of women in rock.
