This revised and updated edition of Culture Smart! Ukraine reveals a country in the throes of change. The euphoria of the famous Orange Revolution has vanished. The momentum for reform has been checked and the forces of authoritarianism have returned. Even so, modernization continues apace and people are eager to be seen as European. The recent political instability highlights the contradictions of Ukrainian society. Ukrainians are proud of their roots, and reticent about the traumas of their past; the country participates in international space programs and produces the world's largest aircraft, but still lives in a world of superstitions. The Ukrainian way of life is intertwined with ancient customs, the old Soviet legacy, and the search for a new European identity. What strikes visitors to this fascinating and important country is the heady mix of ancient history and youthful energy, the resilience of the people, and their generosity of spirit. For the twentieth anniversary of its independence, Ukraine received quite a present—hosting the key matches of Euro 2012. Now it has a game of its own: to show the world that it is a serious player. This new edition of Culture Smart! Ukraine will enable you to visit the country with open eyes. It describes the history that has shaped the Ukrainian psyche, explains present-day values and attitudes, and offers practical advice on what to expect and how to behave. It aims to make you feel at ease, whether you are shopping in a market, dining out, or attending a business meeting.

The Russian orthodox religion is unique, Russian history is tragic, and the people are unpredictable. Russia's military and political power, as well as the rich contribution of its art and culture, is the result of an inner dynamic not always understood by outsiders. This book explores the connections between Russia's turbulent past and its paradoxical present.

There is a revolution taking place, a sweeping change that is impacting all parts of our society: human rights, education, politics, the environment, business, and even the war on terrorism. This revolution is the explosion in numbers, importance, and diversity of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). These not-for-profit entities have forged an effective middle ground between the governmental and corporate realms, and are now impacting policies, delivering services, guiding agendas and advancing initiatives that once were nearly exclusively the arena of the state and business. With this increased impact comes increased responsibility. One fundamental truth about good, just and healthy government and society is that they depend on a culture of responsibility. NGOs share with the governmental and corporate realms a social responsibility to address the extraordinary challenges of our time, whether they be wars, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, the environment, human rights, or disease. As advocates and agents of a more just, ethical, and caring society, NGOs help to foster a culture of responsibility among people and institutions, and nurture conscientious concerns in the emerging global culture. They also have an internal responsibility to follow the highest code of ethical conduct in their own activities. Many of the papers and presentations in this collection deal in generally with the theme of NGOs and responsibility. Others deal more specifically with how the NGO community impacts issues of human rights, terrorism, politics, the environment, the family, and other central components of the human experience. Overall, this book offers a unique perspective into the accomplishments and constraints of the non-governmental community, and recent trends in global non-governmentalism.

Georgia lies between Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East, on the southeastern shore of the Black Sea. This small Caucasian country is used to playing a significant role in global geopolitics, and its strategic location at the crossroads of different civilizations has been a curse as well as a blessing. Once a battlefield of the Christian and Muslim worlds, today it is caught between its NATO aspirations and its location in Russia's backyard. The Silk Road brought the best of the world to Georgia. Its ancient Christian culture shows the influence of Arab, Persian, and Ottoman conquerors. Combined with this is a southern, "Mediterranean" feel, traces of the Soviet legacy, and a strong Western influence. What awaits the visitor is a unique culture that goes back thousands of years. Georgia has a rich historical heritage, wonderful food and wines, unforgettable scenery, authentic folk music and dances, an attractive business climate, and an educated and hospitable people for whom indulging a guest is more a religion than a duty. Culture Smart! Georgia offers invaluable insights and practical tips for tourists and business people alike. The author, Natia Abramia, guides you through the past and present-day realities of her motherland, explaining what makes people tick, how they live and feel, and how to get on with them. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The major objective of this work is besides economic considerations to estimate how far Poland and Ukraine have grown on the social and cultural EI path layer of inter-country convergence which is assumedly even more difficult to achieve than consensus in an economic and political state union - what are the causes of the present state of evolution and what inferences for future transformations steps can be deducted thereof. In terms of more specific terms of reference, so-to-speak research question antedating each chapter of the corpus, the author posed the following hypothesis: In the section about national identities, the embracing question is the following, since it is suspected that the course of history of both nations observed moulded the tangible layers of NC and thus indirectly the development of mental EU convergence: Hypothesis 1: Design and intensity of national identity contribute to Polish and Ukrainian aggregated opinion about their home countries` role on the European theatre and general emotions about the contact to Europe In order to be able to proceed solidly on the territory of BHN, the frame of research is meant to be solidified by retrieving answers to whether the very existence of needs varies across nations or merely their degree of intensity by claiming the following fact: Hypothesis 2: The scan of advertising in Poland (Pl) and Ukraine (Uk) reveals types of human needs which are not part in commonly cited BHN theories; in other words: human needs are culture-specific instead of universal. The structure and intensity of BHN like in the case of other features alongside the N-B-V-A (Needs-Beliefs-Values-Attitudes) axis are a fairly difficult entity to seize; what may be observed and thus measured at utmost is when the bearer satisfies a need by an overt action, e.g. when he buys soap to satisfy his needs of body spruceness. However, purchase decisions are decided by so many factors, e.g. branding, packaging, CRM (Customer Relations Management) etc. that it seems more rewarding to observe what conditions of internal tension are activated by advertising as intermediate entity and possible incentive of acquiring the item promoted. Hypothesis 3: Advertising of fast-moving resp. durable consumer goods delivers indications on single elements of Poles` and Ukrainians` human need structure Experts of transformations studies commonly consider a brisk small-business sector and salubrious [...]
