In a series of enlightening and wide-ranging discussions, all published here for the first time, Chomsky radically reinterprets the events of the past three decades, covering topics from foreign policy during Vietnam to the decline of welfare under the Clinton administration. And as he elucidates the connection between America's imperialistic foreign policy and the decline of domestic social services, Chomsky also discerns the necessary steps to take toward social change. With an eye to political activism and the media's role in popular struggle, as well as U.S. foreign and domestic policy, Understanding Power offers a sweeping critique of the world around us and is definitive Chomsky. Characterized by Chomsky's accessible and informative style, this is the ideal book for those new to his work as well as for those who have been listening for years.

This book has been published in honour of Veikko Tähkä, MD, the prime founder of the Finnish Psychoanalytical Society and a central pioneer in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy in Finland. Veikko Tähkä has published four books and over one hundred articles in the fields of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and psychiatry. For over half a century his interest has steadily moved towards an integrative view of the current psychoanalytic knowledge of human development and the present-day clinical expertise that would permit the use of psychoanalytic treatment as a phase-specific approach, applicable in principle to all levels of disturbed psychic development. This integrative vision became synthesized in Veikko Tähkä´s monumental main work Mind and Its Treatment: A Psychoanalytic Approach (1993), in which his pioneering view of a general psychoanalytic theory of normal and disturbed mental development and its phase-specific encounter was introduced in detail. Veikko Tähkä received his psychoanalytic training in Stockholm in the 1950s and worked at the Austen Riggs Center from 1959 to 1961 and again from 1987 to 1989. Although his framework does not belong to any particular psychoanalytic school, he is internationally known and respected. To this end this volume contains papers by an international group of some of the most well-respected analysts who have either worked with Veikko Tähkä or have been influenced by his work. Psychoanalysis keeps on evolving and rather than going over theories already vocalised, this collection of important papers introduces new ideas and theories along with valuable clinical material. The papers discuss various issues, among them important topics such as dissidence, illusion and reality in the psychoanalytic relationship, transference, unconscious fantasies, therapeutic play and developmental object in psychoanalytic treatment. Contributors: Henrik Enckell, Mikael Enckell, Terttu Eskelinen, Pere Folch, Pentti Ikonen, Otto F. Kernberg, Pearl King, Leena Klockars, Aira Laine, Johannes Lehtonen, Joyce McDougall, Eero Rechardt, Simo Salonen, Anne-Marie Sandler, Riitta Tähkä, Robert S. Wallerstein, Vamik D.Volkan, Jukka Välimäki.

"Power quality problems have increasingly become a substantial concern over the last decade, but surprisingly few analytical techniques have been developed to overcome these disturbances in system-equipment interactions. Now in this comprehensive book, power engineers and students can find the theoretical background necessary for understanding how to analyze, predict, and mitigate the two most severe power disturbances: voltage sags and interruptions. This is the first book to offer in-depth analysis of voltage sags and interruptions and to show how to apply mathematical techniques for practical solutions to these disturbances. From UNDERSTANDING AND SOLVING POWER QUALITY PROBLEMS you will gain important insights into Various types of power quality phenomena and power quality standards Current methods for power system reliability evaluation Origins of voltage sags and interruptions Essential analysis of voltage sags for characterization and prediction of equipment behavior and stochastic prediction Mitigation methods against voltage sags and interruptions Sponsored by: IEEE Power Electronics Society, IEEE Industry Applications Society, IEEE Power Engineering Society.
