The IAU Colloquium No. 143 "The Sun as a Variable Star: Solar and Stellar Irradiance Variations" was held on June 20 - 25, 1993 at the Clarion Harvest House, Boulder, Colorado, USA. The main objective of this Colloquium was to review the most recent results on the observations, theoretical interpreta tions, and empirical and physical models of the variations observed in solar and stellar irradiances. A special emphasis of the Colloquium was to discuss the results gained on the climatic impact of solar irradiance variability. The study of changes in solar and stellar irradiances has been of high interest for a long time. Determining the absolute value of the luminosity of stars with different ages is a crucial question for the theory of stellar evolu tion and energy production of stellar interiors. Observations of the temporal changes of solar and stellar irradiances - in the entire spectral band and at different wavelengths - provide an additional tool for studying the physical processes below the photosphere and in the solar- stellar atmospheres. Since the Sun's radiative output is the main driver of the physical processes with in the Earth's atmosphere, the study of irradiance changes is an extremely important issue for climatic studies as well. Climatic models show that small, but persistent changes in solar irradiance may influence the Earth's climate.

In the centennial year, 1985-86, of Harlow Shapley's birth, the study of globular clusters was no less important to the development of astronomy than in 1915, when Shapley first noted their concentration on the sky. By 1917 Shapley had used the properties of the system of globular clusters to complete the Copernican revolution and locate the solar system, and its Earth-bound observers, far from the center of the Galaxy and the globular cluster distribution. Seven decades later, in the year of these proceedings, globular cluster research and the study of the system of globular clusters in our own and distant galaxies is undergoing a renaissance of activity. The introduction of new observational tools, particularly CCD imagers and digital spectrographs, as well as powerful theoretical methods have transformed the study of globular clusters into one of the main line areas of modern astrophysics. Thus it seemed particularly appropriate to one of us, when considering how the Harvard College Observatory might mark the Shapley centennial, to propose and plan for an IAU Symposium on Globular Cluster Systems in Galaxies. Planning for the Shapley Symposium, as it came to be called, was even more drawn out than the preparation of this volume. The Symposium was originally proposed to the IAU Secretariat in time for it to be held in August, 1985, so that it might occur in the centennial (calendar) year.

Stellar populations, the building blocks of galaxies, are direct tracers of a galaxy's star formation history, its chemical enrichment and the assembly of galaxies in the Universe. This last decade has witnessed a revolution in our observations of galaxies; with larger telescopes and new instruments allowing us to look deeper in the Universe, and to study nearby galaxies in greater detail. IAU Symposium 241 reports the considerable progress made in recent years in this topic. Theorists, observers, and researchers of resolved and unresolved stellar populations discuss the ingredients of stellar population models and compare them to new data, forcing theorists to develop more refined models and methods to derive the physical parameters of stellar populations. New results from the Milky Way, the Local Group, and nearby and distant galaxies are presented.

"Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts" appearing twice a year has become oneof the fundamental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics andneighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world.

by the completion of large aperture synthesis radio telescopes, which have permitted a detailed mapping of radio sources, and by the development of very long base-line interferometry (VLBI), with 4 3 resolutions down to 10- - 10- arc sec, which for the first time has rendered possible radio investigations of the structures of the very compact radio sources found in galactic nuclei and quasars. The observations obtained with this new instrumentation, combined with the work in the optical, infrared and X-ray domain, have made great strides in recent years toward improved testing of radio source models. We feel that the material presented at the Institute represents a rather complete and comprehensive coverage of the present status of studies of non-thermal radio sources, though one is aware of rapid developments in this field of research. The various aspects of this exciting subject were covered in a series of lectures, pre sented in this volume, totaling 44 hours and in 14 topical seminars given by the participants. I wish to express my gratitude to the Scientific Affairs Divi sion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the generous support given to the course. Sincere thanks are also due to Mr. L. Baldeschi for helping with the organization of the meeting and for drawing a number of figures contained in this volume; to Mrs. B. Mandel for the patient typing and help in the editing; and to Mr. R. Primavera for the photographic reproduction of part of the figures.

The publication series of Communications in Asteroseismology (CoAst) is one of the most important international journals in the field of asteroseismology. Asteroseismology is the science of variable and pulsating stars. Every six months CoAst publishes a newsletter with papers on ongoing research projects. Besides these regular issues, special issues such as conference proceedings or program manuals are published in this series. JENAM (Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting) is the largest yearly meeting of Europe's professional astronomer and was hosted in September 2008 in Vienna. The conference contained nine minisymposia, one of them was devoted to asteroseismology. This issue summarizes the latest developments in this field in the form of review and contributed articles.

Some 70 papers present the flare star problem from both a physical and evolutionary aspect, and represent an interaction between investigators working on flare stars in clusters and associations, and those working on the UV Ceti stars in solar vicinity. The variety of perspectives reveal a physical similarity among several non-stable phenomena, and suggest that the different manifestations of stellar activity result from the release of some unknown kind of energy in the outer layers of young stars. The papers deal not only with different aspects of flare stars, but also with such related objects as T Tauri stars, fluors, and Herbig-Haro objects.
