Viewed as a social movement for change, the global education movement calls for the infusion of a global perspective into all curriculum areas. Two assumptions of global education include the view of the individual school as the optimal unit for change efforts, and the importance of local teacher and school action for lasting school improvement. This yearbook defines global education, explains its importance, describes it implementation, and demonstrates its uses for school improvement. The first part examines the context of schooling in which a global perspective can be developed, and the second part is directed toward issues of practice. In chapter 1, Lee F. Anderson develops an argument for global studies in the schools. Barbara Benham Tye delineates the problems inherent in changing school curriculum in chapter 2. The last chapter of this section by Steven L. Lamy presents a framework for understanding extremist ultraconservative attacks on global education. In the next chapter, James Becker links global education to citizenship education. Jane A. Boston discusses educational leadership in global education in chapter 5. Ida Urso examines the role of teachers in chapter 6 and uses qualitative data to show how global education can promote cross-cultural understanding and be a renewing force for teachers. In chapter 7, Jan L. Tucker explores the complex problem of creating educational collaborations between schools and universities. Charlotte C. Anderson documents many ways in which global education involves schools and students with their communities in chapter 8. In chapter 9, Toni Fuss Kirkwood uses personal experience to show how and why global education has become a successful vehicle for school improvement. The conclusion, by Kenneth A. Tye, explores themes gathered in a Center for Human Interdependence (CIH) field study of bringing a global perspective to school curricula. Chapters include references. (LMI)

Imagining the Future of Global Education examines the Grand Educational Narrative (GEN) and the major institutions that shape and disseminate it. The book focuses on national visions of education and the imaginary futures that nations seek to make reality. It critiques how the GEN policy implementation process frequently turns dreams of upward mobility into nightmares. In this way, the book takes a distinctly different approach than most comparative and international education studies. Rather than being oriented toward the past and asking how education systems around the world ended up where they are, chapters in this volume seek an understanding of how various educational visions from around the world inform the present and shape the future. Following an introductory summary of important concepts from scholarship on "imaginary futures" and global education reform, the book is organized around three themes: "What Dreams are Made Of," illustrating, through three case studies, what the GEN looks like at the national level and how it operates across national boundaries; "A Dream within a Dream," considering some of the more novel trends in international education reform in order to provide insight into how dreams seem to function; and "Keeping Dreams from becoming Nightmares," comprising three thematic essays that describe trends in education policy in one or more countries. The book concludes with lessons for scholars and policymakers.

IF one of the key roles of education is to prepare young people for the future why is the future a missng dimension in education? This book breaks new ground by bringing together three crucial concerns: the central role that images of the future play in social and cultural change; the nature of young people's hopes and fears for the future; and the need for schools to educate for a future that will be very different from the present. Part 1 looks at the role of education in turbulent tims and how students can be prepared more effectively for life in the 21st century. Part 2 describes recent research on primary and secondary pupils' views of the future and explores how hopes and fears vary by age and gender. Part 3 contains case studies of good curriculum practice and consideration of the wider implications for whole-school policy. This book should be of interest to all who work in primary, secondary and initial teacher education. It should be of particular value in shaping staff development and whole-school policy and for people working in child development, the humanities, personal and social education, citizenship and environmental education.

This book provides an overview and analysis of current tensions, debates and key issues within OECD nations, particularly Australia, the USA, Canada and the UK, with regard to where education is and should be going. Using a broad historical analysis, it investigates ideas and visions about the future that are increasingly evoked to support arguments about the imminent demise of the dominant modern educational model. Focusing neither on prediction nor prescription, this text suggests the goal is an analysis of the ways in which the notion of the future circulates in contemporary discourse. Five specific discourses are explored: globalisation; new information and communications technologies; feminist; indigenous; and spiritual. The book demonstrates the connections between particular approaches to time, visions of the future, and educational visions and practices. The author asserts that every approach to educational change is inherently based on an underlying image of the future.
