An astonishing transformation over the last 20,000 years has seen our planet changed from a frigid wasteland into the temperate world within which our civilization has grown and thrived. This dynamic episode in our planet's history, right at the close of the Ice Age, saw not only a huge temperature hike but also the Earth's crust bouncing and bending in response to the melting of the great ice sheets and the filling of the ocean basins--dramatic geophysical events that triggered earthquakes, spawned tsunamis, and provoked a series of eruptions from the world's volcanoes. In Waking the Giant, Bill McGuire argues that now that human activities are driving climate change as rapidly as anything seen in post-glacial times, the sleeping giant beneath our feet is stirring once again. When and if it finally wakes, we should all be afraid--very afraid. Could we be leaving our children not only a far hotter world, but a more geologically unstable one too?

Brand maturity is not inevitable. Waking the Giant challenges current thinking and practicewhen it comes to achieving growth with mature brands. This book convincingly demonstrates that the challenge ofrevitalising a mature brand is just as exciting -- andrequires just as much ingenuity and innovation -- as launching anew brand. While major mature brands still dominate many categories, margins and growth opportunities are often less than exciting. Thecritical question is: milk the brand, or revitalise? And, just asimportant: is your organisation fully committed to, and able todeliver on, your chosen strategy? Inside you'll discover: the merits of revitalisation and milkingstrategies, and how to choose between them how to renew positive differentiation for amature brand how to implement a revitalisation strategy andeliminate outdated work practices that could ruin your plan how to align your revitalisation strategy withthe consumers' and industry sector's evolutionary trends.

Waking Giant is a brilliant, definitive history of America’s vibrant and tumultuous rise during the Jacksonian era from David S. Reynolds, the Bancroft Prize-winning author of Walt Whitman’s America. Casting fresh light on Andrew Jackson, who redefined the presidency, along with John Quincy Adams and James K. Polk, who expanded the nation’s territory and strengthened its position internationally, Reynolds captures the turbulence of a democracy caught in the throes of the controversy over slavery, the rise of capitalism, and the birth of urbanization.

"Whisky Dream" tells the extraordinary story of one man's dream to raise from the dead not one, but two of Islay's most cherished malts. After a hard-fought battle, former wine merchant Mark Reynier, together with old business partner Simon and masterblender Jim McEwan reopened Bruichladdich in 2001 after seven years of silent mash-tuns. Their astonishing journey involved scrapes with a top secret MOD submarine, U.S. military satellites, the CIA, faceless multinationals, patronising bank staff, supply problems, all-new international sales and distribution network, and an eleventh hour, GBP7.5 million bank loan. Port Charlotte Distillery, closed its doors on Islay in 1929, exactly a century after its foundation, as a direct result of a major downturn in the whisky industry, caused by Prohibition in the United States, becoming nothing more than a windswept ruin. Not happy with achieving what even their families and close friends told them was impossible with Bruichladdich, and after declaring that he would 'never, ever, ever do this again', Mark set his sights on the traumatic challenge of, indeed, 'doing it all over again' with Port Charlotte. More than anything, however, this is the story of the islanders themselves, 'The Ileach': their resourcefulness, their stubbornness, their ancient ability to triumph over adversity. This is what brought - and will bring - both Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte distilleries back from the grave.

This is a study of the most paradoxical aspect of modernism, its obsession with the past. Eliot wrote that the artist must be conscious "not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence." This creed permeated the movement: Modernists believed that the energies of the past could be resurrected in modern works, and that they could be the very force that makes those works modern: the urge of Pound and others to "make it new" stemmed from seeing the past as a source of renewal. Schneidau focuses on separate texts that incorporate these concepts: Joyce's Ulysses, Hardy's poems, Forster's Howards End, Conrad's Secret Agent, Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio, and finally Pound's Cantos. In his discussions, many little-noticed connections are examined, including a transatlantic set: Hardy with Pound, Forster with Fitzgerald, Joyce and Lawrence with Anderson.
