For more than one hundred years, until the 1920s, coal production involved blasting a seam of coal and loading it by had into a mine car. In the late 1920s, operators introduced machines into the mines, including the coal loader. In this book, Keith Dix explores the impact of technology on miners and operators during a crucial period in industrial history. Dix reconstructs the social, political, technical and economic environment of the “hand-loading” era and then views the evolution of mechanical coal technology, including the inventions of Joseph Joy. He also examines the rise of the United Mine Workers under John L. Lewis, and the expanded role of the state under New Deal legislation and regulations.

- Minerals Yearbook, 2014, V. 3: Area Reports: International: Asia and the Pacific. Volume III, Area Reports: International, is published as four separate reports. These regional reports contain the latest available minerals data on more than 180 foreign countries and discuss the importance of minerals to the economies of these nations and the United States. Each report begins with an overview of the region's mineral industries during the year. It continues with individual country chapters that examine the mining, refining, processing, and use of minerals in each country of the region and how each country's mineral industry relates to U.S. industry. Most chapters include production tables and industry structure tables, information about Government policies and programs that affect the country's mineral industry, and an outlook section.

'-'hen the seam does not outcrop on the surface, and it can be opened by a shaft that will, in the case of an inclined seam, reach the coal at its lowest level and about in the center of the strike of the seam, or when the seam is fiat a shaft will cut it nearly in the center of the coal bed, such an opening is the only kind practicable. Drifts.--The height of a drift depends largely on the thickness and inclination of the seam. When possible, the height should be from 6 ft. to 7 ft. in the clear. To obtain such a height in a flat thin seam or a thin seam 0'1 light pitch requires the brushing down of top or blowing up of bottom. This adds considerable to the cost of driving the drift, and the extent to which it should be done must be determined by conditions at the mine. In a thick seam or one having a heavy pitch a height of about 7 ft. in the clear is best. The width of a drift depends on the width of the mine cars used, the thickness and inclination of the coal seam, the character of the top and bottom, and whether the drift is to be single or double tracked. It must have suilicient width to provide clearance for the mine car, with enough room on one side to provide for a drainage ditch and enough additional space for men to pass mine cars without danger of being crushed against the rib. If the seam is a comparatively thin one lying at considerable inclination it will be necessary to do some rock work to provide the required width. If the seam is a thick one, or is of such light pitch that the desired width can be secured in coal, the character of the top and bottom.will...

In the 1920s there were over a million coalminers working in over 3000 collieries across Great Britain, and the industry was one of the most important and powerful in British history. It dominated the lives of generations of individuals, their families and communities, and its legacy is still with us today _ many of us have a coalmining ancestor. ??Yet family historians often have problems in researching their mining forebears. Locating the relevant records, finding the sites of the pits, and understanding the work involved and its historical background can be perplexing. That is why Brian Elliott's concise, authoritative and practical handbook will be so useful, for it guides researchers through these obstacles and opens up the broad range of sources they can go to in order to get a vivid insight into the lives and experiences of coalminers in the past. ??His overview of the coalmining history _ and the case studies and research tips he provides _ will make his book rewarding reading for anyone looking for a general introduction to this major aspect of Britain's industrial heritage. His directory of regional and national sources and his commentary on them will make this guide an essential tool for family historians searching for an ancestor who worked in coalmining underground, on the pit top or just lived in a mining community.??As featured in Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine and the Barnsley Chronicle.

This work reflects part of the history of Wyoming coal mining. Much more needs to be written. To those that have produced written histories, historical overviews, and manuscripts we cited here, we extend thanks. To the archaeologists and historians who are studying Wyoming's past and attempting to preserve its lasting legacy, we applaud your efforts. The flight of time is not complete, but the history that has passed shows coal miners will be a part of the future. To those that are attempting to preserve the mining history of Wyoming and the West, we are grateful. And to men such as Steven Creasman and Gary Beach, who have the courage to dream and the willingness to persevere in attempting to save America's past, thank you. With the help of such unselfish individuals this work has been strengthened, but the responsibilities of accuracy fall to the authors alone.

Excerpt from Fourth Annual Report of the State Inspector of Coal Mines, 1916 The condition of the coal industry for this year shows marked improvement over the preceding year, both in production, market price and wages paid. The production amounted to tons. Fourteen of the nineteen coal-producing counties contributed to the increase, which was tons; tons of the total was in run-of - mine, the bulk coming from Las Animas County. This was used at the-steel works, either as coal or in the form of coke. The coke production amounted to tons, an increase of tons, ' compared with the preceding year. The selling price of coal advanced materially in the fall of the year, and the workers have received an increase in wages. The monthly and annual reports from the Operators, with few exceptions, are so incomplete that it is practically impossible for this department to give the full information required by law. The Federal Government has adopted a standard for mining statistics, a Copy of which is hereto attached. The principal object of this is to make all coal mine inspection reports uniform, and to eliminate duplicate reports now made by the mine owners to the different state and federal institutions. The monthly and annual report forms furnished the Operators by this department have been changed to conform with the federal requirements. The attention of the operators is drawn to the importance of filling in all details of the aforesaid reports, in order that this department may comply with the new statistical requirements. It will no longer be neces sary for operators to report non-fatal accidents to this department, as arrangements have been made to get this information from the Industrial Commission. Fourteen proposed amendments to the mining law are now being considered by the legislature, the object being to make the law more specific and to conform with the state compensation law. Coal Mine Structures is based on a six-year study, carried out at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne between 1976 and 1982 and financed by the National Coal Board and the European Coal and Steel Community (Projects 7220 - ACj806 and 7220 - ACj814), into the behaviour of under ground openings in British coal mines. The original work has been expanded to include other relevant British and international data. How ever, it remains, deliberately, a personal view based on a specific - albeit broad - research programme. It does not pretend to be a complete description of the behaviour of shafts, tunnels, rooms, pillars and long wall excavations. Nor does it set out to provide a manual for design. The specific aim is to show, often through consideration of quite detailed laboratory and field data, how the observed performance of some under ground structures during mining, can be explained by the deformation characteristics of the rocks which surround them. The work is based on observatiollB by many engineers working for the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment, and by research associates and postgraduate students at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. I am grateful to them all, but I am particularly indebted to Dr A. H. Wilson and Mr M. J. Bell of the National Coal Board, to Dr P. F. R. Altounyan, Dr P. Garritty, Dr P. Holmes, and Dr P. D. Shelton formerly of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, to Dr R. N.

Excerpt from The Coal Mines: Containing a Description of the Various Systems of Working and Ventilating Mines, Together With a Sketch of the Principal Coal Regions of the Globe, Including Statistics of the Coal Production Most of the matter composing the following pages was prepared for publi cation two years ago, but, on my appointment to the office of Mine Inspector of the State, the work was laid aside for want of time to complete it. It is now offered to the public in its present form in the hope that it will in some degree supply a want long felt by practical men in the United States. I am aware that the work is both too brief and imperfect, but hope its publication may induce some one more competent to prepare a more elaborate volume on the subject. The business of coal mining will continue to be, for several centu ries to come, the main industry of our country, for coal is the main-spring of modern civilization. Less is known, because less is written, on underground coal mining than on any other subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
