This booklet discusses what teachers may encounter in their first year of teaching, presenting information from teachers themselves. Information comes mainly from a series of discussions held among winners of the First Class Teachers Award sponsored every year by Sallie Mae, a corporation dedicated to education. Focus group discussions with winning teachers addressed such issues as: what the first year was like; what the toughest challenges were; what principals and administrators can do to help; what colleges and universities should know in order to prepare preservice teachers for the real world of teaching; what the greatest rewards were; how the students influenced the experience; whether preparation was sufficient; and what insights experienced teachers had to offer new teachers. The booklet provides resources for further information, offers a checklist of tips from first-year and veteran teachers, and presents acknowledgments of teachers who helped make the book possible. This study involved a one-time survey of first-year undergraduate students at a Canadian University to determine their expectations when beginning a writing intensive course (i.e., the so-called "W" course, which is required of all first-year undergraduates at the University of Manitoba.) In this study, we focused on the University's Introduction to University course, a three credit hour course designed to help students make the transition from high school to university. The course covers academic writing and research skills, and identifies ways for students to learn and study more efficiently. Of particular importance to our research, the course focuses on the process of developing mastery of the academic essay. The purpose of this study was to see what, if any, expectations first-year students have when taking a writing course. Our research question was: What are the expectations for composition instruction of first-year students enrolled in the University of Manitoba's Introduction to University course? Our results indicated that first-year students had very high expectations for the kinds of writing processes that would be taught in their course. It was surprising to find that the students expected to acquire declarative knowledge in areas like grammar and punctuation to the same degree that they expected to be taught to employ strategic thinking in their writing. The Survey of First-Year Students is appended. (Contains 1 table.).

Some lose confidence in their ability to succeed; others muddle through, struggling to solve problems that others have already solved many times over. In this book Mitch Lacey brings together those solutions, helping new agile developers learn from others' experience quickly and painlessly. This engaging, realistic book systematically removes the pain of agile adoption, and breaks down the barriers to rapid success. The Scrum Field Guide is organized into 42 bite-size, practical tips - each supported with highly relevant real-world examples and case studies. Lacey presents a section of tips that apply to everyone on the agile team, from leaders to customers. Next, he offers sections specific to each role - including tips for management, program/project managers, team members, and product owners. Lacey answers the questions new agile adopters ask most often - including 'can I modify standard agile processes and still be agile?' and 'how on Earth can we release software within a short timeframe if we can't even do it in a long timeframe?' Along the way, he presents proven solutions for a wide variety of common problems - from prioritizing requirements to building release plans, creating workable software iterations to getting buy-in from skeptical executives.
